Lead Monitor Swing Shift Volunteers of America Los Angeles (VOALA) – Non‑profit human services organization committed to serving people in need, strengthening families, and building communities.

Pay Rate: $20.90 – $22 Per Hour

Job Summary & Purpose: Lead the Monitor team to arrange, coordinate, supervise, mentor and oversee the Monitors’ efforts to provide security of the program premises and safety for program clients, visitors and employees. Lead safety training and ongoing oversight. Drive to transport participants when licensed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Assign shifts and schedule Monitors around the clock.

Train Monitors in program operations, safety and security procedures.

Oversee operations for safety practices and provide ongoing leadership.

Shelter Security

Monitor entrance: authorize entry/exit of employees, participants, visitors, guests and vendors.

Bag and person screening: search all participants’ belongings on each entry.

Patrol premises to detect intrusion, secure doors, windows and gates; make reports as needed.

Shelter Safety

Observe for safe operations; report and correct spills, unsafe conditions or defective equipment.

Know fire exits; assist participants in emergencies.

Monitor clients and conduct room checks; record rule compliance and report to clinical/case management.

Call police or fire in emergencies (fire, unauthorized persons).

Asset Protection

Protect limited resources from theft or loss; report suspicious events.

Maintain written reports and incident logs for daily activities and irregularities.

Act as a role model for participants at all times; prioritize client needs.

Client/Participant Support

Answer phones and take messages for clients and staff.

Maintain office housekeeping: ensure common areas, laundry areas and restrooms are clean, disinfected and operational.

Assist shelter staff during services, including set‑up for classes, meetings, meals, recreation and events.

Perform driving tasks (for licensed monitors):

Transport participants to/from service locations, work sites, medical facilities.

Assist passengers with mobility devices; ensure safety while operating vehicle.

Maintain trip records, mileage and fuel usage.

Maintain vehicle condition; clean and maintain equipment; perform routine maintenance.

Input required data into computer systems and logs.

Other duties as arise to support program goals.

Essential Duties

Train, supervise and schedule Monitors.

Shelter Security:

monitor entrance, screen bags and persons, patrol premises.

Shelter Safety:

monitor clients, conduct room checks, report violations, observe for safety concerns.

Asset Protection:

complete written reports and incident logs.

Client / Participant support, including driving tasks if licensed.

Other duties as required; may change.

Act as a role model for participants at all times.

Qualifications Requirements

Pass fingerprint clearance, background check, criminal history, personal references, employment and education verification.

Education

Within 30 days of hire, complete VOALA safety training.

Experience

One year general security field, social services / human services, or customer service experience.

One year proven college coursework or completion of Careers for a Cause (C4C) or other homeless training course with a certificate can substitute for experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Current California driver’s license and clean driving record; knowledge of CA driving laws.

Experience in a group residential setting preferred.

Experience serving the homeless preferred.

Experience in mental health or substance abuse treatment setting, or other group residential program preferred.

Database familiarity.

Clean driving record insurable by VOALA insurance.
