Position Scope / Summary The Cancer Registry Data Manager is responsible for ensuring the health and optimal functioning of the Cancer Registry database, regularly running checks to confirm efficient and reliable operation for abstraction and reporting. The manager receives, documents, and tracks any database issues reported by users, identifies trends with the software provider, and monitors resolution. Serves as the primary liaison with the database vendor and OSUWMC IT teams, functions as the subject‑matter expert for the database, and provides initial and ongoing training.
Manages a team of ODS‑certified and non‑certified staff, monitoring workflow, performance, and productivity. This includes interviewing, hiring, training, supervising staff, and administering performance reviews.
Maintains expertise in abstraction through thorough review, synthesis, and summarization of clinical information and independent coding of patient abstracts according to all oncology standard‑setter coding requirements, including the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System reporting requirements. The data documented enable the cancer registry department to produce complete, timely, and high‑quality data that meet accreditation and reporting requirements and support OSUCCC‑James operational, research, quality, and finance areas.
Responsibilities
Ensure database health through routine performance checks and issue resolution.
Act as liaison with database vendor and OSUWMC IT teams.
Serve as subject‑matter expert and provide database training.
Manage ODS‑certified and non‑certified staff: workflow, performance, hiring, training, and performance reviews.
Abstract, review, synthesize, and summarize clinical information; code patient abstracts per oncology standards.
Produce high‑quality data for reporting and accreditation requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of 6 years in a hospital‑based cancer registry.
Bachelor's degree desired or equivalent training and experience.
Oncology Data Specialist certification (ODS‑C) required.
Expert knowledge of cancer registry data management preferred.
Excellent knowledge of medical and oncology terminology, chart review, and abstraction.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for training and onboarding.
Knowledge of reporting requirements and accreditation standards preferred.
Must maintain the Oncology Data Specialist‑Certified (ODS‑C) credential through the National Cancer Registrars Association.
