Compensation & Schedule

$5460 per season

Staff training $16.00/hour

Monday–Friday (8 weeks)

General Functions Under the direction of the Senior Program Director as well as Assistant Camp Director, the Unit Director is responsible for the direct supervision and organization of the assigned group including up to 10 staff and any junior counselor or counselor in training assigned to the unit. Responsibilities include organization of daily activities, special events, and rainy‑day activities, ensuring objectives are met and age‑appropriate content for campers. Plan and lead 1 overnight per session (4 total).

Responsibilities

Attend and be involved in staff training and orientation.

Be available to work daily within camp schedule as outlined by the Camp Director.

Work with other staff to develop a full recreational and educational program each session.

Attend all weekly camp staff meetings and participate in any additional meetings as needed.

Conduct one weekly lunch meeting with other staff in the assigned group to discuss activity plans/overnight for the session. Mandatory attendance.

Meet with the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director as needed to discuss camp matters.

Assist in development and implementation of special programs as assigned by the Program Director.

Maintain all records for the group including attendance, camper assignments, overnight attendance, parent communications.

Assist with supervision of lunch period and ensure campers are eating well and staying hydrated.

Assist campers with daily organization of belongings.

Participate in all activities, games, sports, etc. in which the unit is involved.

Assist in daily swim program; if not needed, make daily checks of each swim area to ensure safety of campers. Female staff must wear one-piece bathing suit.

Act in a professional manner at all times.

Develop and maintain a friendly working relationship and act as a resource/support person for other staff members.

Ensure the team of campers, CIT’s, and counselors receive a fun, meaningful, and safe experience.

Supervise CITs assigned to your unit and provide feedback and written evaluations.

Maintain cleanliness and organization of the camp area.

Handle discipline problems consistently, seeking guidance as needed.

Lead 1 overnight per session (4 total).

Assign campers to teepee groups and manage end‑of‑day activities.

Attend all family nights (2 per summer).

Be available after camp hours on the last day and participate in camp close up.

Perform any other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a child‑related field or equivalent experience working with children in recreation and/or education.

At least 1 year of prior experience working in a camp setting or environment.

Qualifications

Must be 21 years of age.

Excellent organizational and communication skills (verbal and written).

Mature, responsible, and sincere interest in working with people.

Knowledge of YMCA goals and mission.

Knowledge of various resources for programming ideas and ability to apply them.

Knowledge of age-appropriate activities and expectations of children ages 3 to 14.

Trainings & Certifications

CPR/AED and/or First Aid certifications (opportunity provided).

Complete YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and other related training at Camp Evergreen Orientation.

Work Environment Duties are performed in an outdoor environment and in a camp group setting; exposure to undesirable working conditions, communicable infectious diseases, and risk of injury from children. Strict adherence to preventive health policies. Noise level moderate to above average. Exposure to wet/cold, hot/humid climate.
