Camp Evergreen Bears (Grades 7‑8) Unit Director - Seasonal Salary: $5,250 per season. Staff training: $16.00 per hour. Schedule: Monday‑Friday for 8 weeks.

General Functions Under the direction of the Senior Program Director and Assistant Camp Director, the Unit Director is responsible for the direct supervision and organization of an assigned group, up to 10 staff members, including junior counselors or counselors‑in‑training. Responsibilities include organizing daily activities, special events, and rainy day activities, ensuring age‑appropriate program delivery, providing opportunities for camper confidence and life‑skills, and leading one overnight per session.

Attend and participate in staff training and orientation.

Be available to work daily within the camp schedule.

Collaborate with staff to develop recreational and educational programs.

Attend all weekly camp staff meetings and additional meetings as needed.

Conduct weekly lunch meetings with staff to discuss activity plans and overnight sessions.

Meet with the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director as required.

Assist in development and implementation of special programs.

Maintain records for attendance, camper assignments, overnight attendance, parent communications.

Supervise the lunch period, ensuring proper hydration and nutrition.

Help campers organize personal belongings daily.

Participate in all activities, games, sports, and swim program as needed.

Maintain a professional appearance and conduct with campers, families, and staff.

Develop friendly working relationships and serve as a resource for staff.

Own responsibility for the safety and experience of campers and CITs.

Provide weekly feedback and written evaluations for CITs.

Ensure cleanliness of the camp area.

Handle discipline consistently, consulting the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director when needed.

Plan and lead one overnight per session (four total).

Assign campers to teepee groups and manage end‑of‑day activities.

Attend family nights (two per summer).

Remain available after camp hours on the last day for close‑up activities.

Carry out additional tasks assigned by the Program Director, Assistant Camp Director, or Camp Director.

Requirements Experience and Education

Bachelor’s Degree in a child‑related field or equivalent experience working with children in recreation and/or education.

At least 1 year of prior experience working in a camp setting.

Qualifications

Must be 21 years of age.

Excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Shows maturity, responsibility, and sincere interest in working with people.

Knowledge of YMCA mission and goals.

Ability to use programming resources effectively.

Knowledge of age‑appropriate activities for children ages 3‑14.

Training & Certifications

CPR/AED and/or First Aid certifications (opportunity provided).

Attend and complete YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and related training during orientation.

Work Environment Duties are performed outdoors and within a camp setting. Employees may be exposed to undesirable conditions, communicable diseases, and risk of injury from children. Follow preventive health policies at all times. Noise level is moderate to above average. Employees may be frequently exposed to wet/cold, hot/humid climates.
