Brief Job Description This position is available for Morning, Evening and Night shifts on multiple homes. It may be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights and/or weekends. You will work in an environment that values and respects those we serve, aiming to help all people achieve a higher level of wellness and independence.
State Supported Living Centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus‑based direct services and supports at 13 locations throughout the state.
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) II works as part of a team that helps people with intellectual disabilities achieve their goals through routine care, emergency care, treatment, and training. Responsibilities may include grooming, bathing, feeding, observing and reporting an individual’s conditions and behaviors, providing meaningful interactions, and participating in individualized training and active treatment programs.
The DSP documents information on the person’s life, such as daily schedule events, responses to activities, training, and unusual incidents. Work is performed with guidance from supervision and training, and involves completing decisions based on provided guidance and input from professional staff. The role may also involve training or mentoring new DSP I staff, volunteering as shift or team lead, and driving a state‑owned vehicle if required.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
Attend work regularly and may be required to work specific shift schedules, rotating schedules, extended shifts, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy, and perform other duties as assigned.
Implement habilitation, rehabilitation, behavior management, crisis intervention, and treatment programs tailored to individuals.
Teach life skills such as feeding, dressing, and personal hygiene.
Participate in the development of individual treatment plans.
Observe individuals for signs of disease, injury, medication reactions, or other conditions requiring medical intervention and document observations accurately.
Report significant changes in physical condition or behavior and record information appropriately.
Assist with transporting individuals to scheduled activities and in emergencies.
Administer first aid as appropriate.
Attend to healthcare needs under supervision of medical personnel.
Evacuate individuals during fires, natural disasters, emergencies, or drills.
Prevent or manage aggressive behavior and administer CPR during emergencies.
Perform direct care and support services.
Provide training/mentorship to new DSP I staff and/or volunteer as shift or team lead.
Participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations Plan activation, possibly requiring alternate shift patterns or locations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
Ability to speak and read English.
Ability to make decisions and use good judgment during critical incidents.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Ability to demonstrate proper body mechanics, posture, and lifting techniques.
Knowledge of individual care techniques and treatment, therapy, and developmental programs, or willingness to learn through training.
Ability to provide individual care, administer first aid or CPR, perform Ukeru (when trained), and conduct Safe Use of Restraint (SUR).
Ability to communicate effectively and to train, mentor, or coach others.
Ability to work effectively with others as part of a team.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 90 days after hire is preferred. Out‑of‑state license holders must provide an original certified driving record. Certification in CPR, First Aid, Ukeru, and/or Safe Use of Restraint (SUR) is preferred.
Required Initial screening criteria: High School diploma or equivalent, or prior employment experience.
Preferred
At least 6 months of work experience.
Experience in writing reports.
Experience in behavior programs for persons with intellectual developmental disabilities.
Experience with people who have mental health or intellectual developmental disabilities.
Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and the HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males aged 18–25 must register with the Selective Service. All Employees are subject to random drug testing.
