Overview
The Program Coordinator for 4th "R" is responsible for overseeing a program that provides care and enrichment for children ages 5 to 12 outside of regular school hours, including before and after school, during holidays, and over the summer. This position involves planning and managing age‑appropriate activities, supervising and training staff, ensuring the program complies with state licensing and safety regulations, and maintaining effective communication with families. Additionally, this position handles administrative tasks such as accounting, enrollment, and maintaining necessary records. The primary goal of the Program Coordinator is to create a safe, supportive, and engaging environment that fosters children's social, emotional, and academic growth. The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform related duties as needed. Responsibilities
Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct various recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, youth development, youth employment, or other community service activities and programs at neighborhood recreation, sports, or community facilities. Design, evaluate, and recommend continuance, modification, or cancellation of recreation, educational, child care, special events, and community service activities and programs. Determine facility, equipment, scheduling, and staffing requirements for programs and events. Coordinate departmental activities with related activities of other departments or outside agencies and groups. Determine needs and priorities of neighborhoods/customers and plan programs consistent with those needs and priorities. Provide information and referrals to the neighborhoods/customers concerning available programs, including the development and distribution of brochures, flyers, and other promotional materials. Provide workshop instruction and in‑service training for lower‑level staff. Prepare and maintain written reports, records, and memorandums related to assigned programs or facilities. Prepare and compile materials for obtaining grant funds. Coordinate and conduct part‑time and seasonal recruitments. Make oral presentations to various groups and/or boards. Develop and coordinate fundraising events. Supervise recreation leaders, volunteers, and other assigned personnel in activities. Manage and operate a sports facility or a neighborhood community center. Respond to inquiries from the public and other agencies. Interview, select, evaluate, and oversee participants and activities related to the program. Perform related duties as required. Qualifications
Knowledge of: Recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, youth development or employment, or other community service activities, such as aquatics, sports, games, arts, crafts, dramatics, music, or other special community programs. Principles of supervision and training. First aid and safety practices. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Common computer software packages. Organization, procedures, and operating details of the department. Facilities, equipment, and staffing needed to provide recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, or special community services to the community. Ability to: Read, write, and speak the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance. Organize and direct a variety of recreation, youth development or employment, educational enrichment, child care, special events, or special community service activities and programs. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Keep records and prepare reports. Express and relate ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Plan, assign, coordinate, schedule, and supervise the work of lower‑level personnel. Speak before groups. Develop program‑related policies and procedures. Compile and prepare grant funding request materials. Experience and Education Two years of leadership experience in a recreational, educational, youth development, child care, special events, or community service setting, which included responsibilities such as organizing and providing general guidance over the activities of children, teenagers, and adults. Successful completion of college‑level courses with major coursework in recreation, education, child development, or a closely related field may substitute for the experience requirement on a year‑for‑year basis. Completion of thirty (30) semester units is equivalent to one year of experience. Special Qualifications
Driver License: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case‑by‑case basis. Assessments: Pass a physical, criminal background check, and drug test. Pass a tuberculosis screening test. Training: This position is designated as a Mandatory Reporter; completion of Mandatory Reporter training is required within two weeks of employment. Physical Demands and Work Conditions

Work Conditions: May be required to work weekends, evenings, and be on‑call. Probationary Period: Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.
