Crew Leader (Landscape & Learning, Spring) Non-career, part‑time/seasonal position within the Department of Youth, Parks & Community Enrichment (YPCE) Workforce Development Unit. The Crew Leader supervises and mentors 5‑12 Youth Aides in outdoor park maintenance tasks such as weeding, tree trimming, walkway edging, trash removal, and graffiti abatement. Each Leader receives a vehicle for daily transportation of crew and equipment, and is responsible for maintaining a safe work environment, managing tools, keeping accurate work‑hour records, documenting significant events, and fostering positive work habits.

Responsibilities

Lead recreation and youth development program activities.

Train and instruct a crew of Youth Aides, serving as a role model.

Supervise manual labor projects using landscaping tools, graffiti equipment, paint, and chemicals.

Operate a motor vehicle safely to transport crew to work sites.

Inspect, recommend repair or replacement of equipment, and ensure proper care.

Compile basic written records and documentation related to assigned programs.

Open and close City facilities, monitoring usage and preparing facilities for use.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Experience : Six months of full‑time supervisory or lead experience. College‑level courses may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis; 15 semester units equals six months of experience.

Education : None required. Proof of education may be required if used to meet qualifications.

Special Qualifications

Valid California Class C driver’s license required at time of appointment. Candidates who cannot meet this requirement due to a physical disability may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.

Age Requirement Must be at least 21 years old by time of appointment; some assignments require applicants to be 25 years old.

Assessments

Pass a physical and criminal background check.

Pass a tuberculosis screening test.

Training

Mandatory Reporter training required within two weeks of employment.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions This active position requires frequent walking, running, standing, and use of hands for grasping. Work may be performed outdoors in heat and exposure to dust, pollen, and noise. Work may be required on weekends. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
