Laboratory Manager – Innovation Hub, Arizona State University

Job Description The Polytechnic School (TPS), located at the ASU Polytechnic campus in Mesa, is nationally recognized for hands‑on learning, project‑based curricula, applied research, and industry engagement. TPS is seeking a Laboratory Coordinator, Sr. to manage the Innovation Hub, a modern, project‑focused engineering shop that supports instructional labs, student projects, applied research, and student organizations.

This position reports to the TPS Manager of Infrastructure and Lab Operations and oversees day‑to‑day operations, equipment readiness, safety, training, and technical support. The Innovation Hub is planned for a major redesign and expansion in 2026, and this role will contribute ideas for modern equipment, workflow improvements, and operational planning.

Responsibilities Daily Operations and Technical Support

Manage day-to-day operations of the Innovation Hub, including oversight of all activity, equipment readiness, and user support.

Supervise the safe and proper use of fabrication tools, machines, and prototyping equipment.

Serve as the lead expert for the laboratory’s equipment, software, tools, and systems.

Troubleshoot and repair equipment; coordinate with vendors for service or repairs.

Develop technical drawings, plans, and specifications for projects.

Perform calculations and provide technical guidance to support fabrication and prototyping.

Instructional and Student Support

Train, guide, and support students and student apprentices in safe and effective use of laboratory equipment and systems.

Partner with faculty to support hands‑on learning experiences and course‑related projects.

Supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the work of student apprentices.

Create training media, SOPs, and documentation for laboratory and equipment use.

Safety and Compliance

Maintain a safe working environment that meets ASU, TPS, and FSE safety expectations.

Enforce safety practices, equipment standards, and proper operating procedures.Maintain safety documentation including SDS, manuals, and signage.

Coordinate safety and compliance matters with the TPS Manager of Infrastructure and Lab Operations and FSE Safety staff.

Equipment, Inventory, and Facilities Coordination

Conduct preventative maintenance, inspections, and readiness checks for all tools and equipment.

Procure supplies, consumables, and replacement parts; work directly with vendors for product information and pricing.

Keep the Innovation Hub clean, organized, and well stocked.

Work with TPS leadership and FSE Facilities on planning, upgrades, and redesign of laboratory spaces, including the upcoming 2026 expansion.

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated experience designing, leading and operating a high-utilization, open‑access fabrication or maker facility serving a diverse user population.

Advanced hands‑on expertise with multiple fabrication systems, such as CNC machining, laser cutting, additive manufacturing, and wood or metal shops.

Proven ability to design, implement, and collaborate on formal training, certification, and access control programs for fabrication equipment.

Experience establishing or improving machine safety systems, including risk assessments, machine guarding, lockout/tagout practices, and incident prevention measures.

Strong proficiency with CNC programming, CAM software, or digital fabrication workflows, including troubleshooting complex jobs and mentoring advanced users.

Demonstrated track record of reducing equipment downtime through preventative maintenance programs, process improvements, or data-driven decision-making.

Experience supervising, mentoring, or developing student employees, apprentices, or technical staff in hands‑on lab or shop environments.

Ability to independently manage equipment lifecycle planning, including procurement, replacement strategies, and vendor coordination.

Experience contributing to facility planning, renovations, or expansions, including equipment layout, workflow design, and operational readiness.

Industry or professional experience outside higher education that brings applied fabrication, prototyping, or shop management practices into an academic setting.
