This role requires a hands‑on, people‑focused leader with experience managing geographically dispersed organization, complex multi‑state payroll environments, percentage of completion accounting and sales commission structures. The Controller will ensure strong internal controls, accurate and timely financial reporting, successful audit and scalable processes to support growth in a private equity environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for all locations
Prepare and review consolidated financial statements in accordance with GAAP
Ensure timely, accurate reporting for executive leadership and private equity stakeholders
Manage intercompany accounting and eliminations
Coordinate annual audits and support external auditors
Accounting Operations, Payroll & Commissions
Oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and payroll
Manage multi‑state payroll processes, ensuring compliance with wage and hour regulations
Oversee accounting and controls related to benefits, bonuses, and incentive compensation
Manage the calculation, accrual, reporting, and payout of sales commissions across a multi‑location sales organization
Partner with sales leadership to ensure accuracy and transparency of commission plans
Internal Controls & Compliance
Implement and maintain internal controls aligned with private equity standards
Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal and multi‑state tax regulations, and local requirements
Oversee sales/use tax, property tax, and coordination of income tax filings with third‑party providers
Support risk management, insurance, and bonding requirements
Leadership & Team Development
Lead, mentor, and develop corporate and field‑based accounting team members
Drive accountability, performance management, and continuous improvement
Serve as a key partner to operations, HR, and sales leadership
Promote consistent accounting practices across all locations
Systems & Process Improvement
Serve as a subject matter expert and primary owner of the Sage 300 ERP system
Lead process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
Support ERP enhancements, reporting automation, and acquisition integration
Strategic & Private Equity Support
Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis in partnership with the Director of Accounting and CFO
Provide financial insights on profitability by location, service line, and customer
Assist with acquisitions, due diligence, and post‑acquisition integration
Support lender and private equity reporting requirements
Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
CPA strongly preferred
8–12+ years of progressive accounting experience with leadership responsibility
Experience in a private equity–backed or fast‑growth environment
Strong people leadership and communication skills
Experience managing sales commissions or incentive compensation programs
Hands‑on experience with Sage 300 ERP
Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
Preferred
Experience in industrial services, field service, construction services, or equipment service industries
Experience supporting acquisitions and operational scaling
Familiarity with job costing and service‑based revenue models
