Shift: Day (possible evening/night/weekend shifts). Telework: Not Eligible. Travel: Up to 5%.

About the Role The Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) provide direct care and support services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at the Texas state supported living centers, serving medically fragile or behaviorally challenged individuals. DSPs work as part of a team to help residents achieve their personal goals, including routine and emergency care, treatment, training, and documentation. Tasks include personal hygiene, medication administration, observation, reporting, transportation, first aid, CPR, emergency evacuations, and crisis intervention. DSPs may mentor new staff, volunteer as shift/team leads (“Charge”), and support disaster response activities.

Responsibilities

Attend work on a regular basis and work scheduled shifts, including rotating, extended, or overtime per agency leave policy.

Implement habilitation, rehabilitation, behavior management, crisis intervention, and treatment programs aligned with residents’ goals.

Teach life skills such as feeding, dressing, personal hygiene, and other training.

Participate in development of individual treatment plans.

Observe residents for signs of disease, injury, medication reactions, or other conditions and document observations accurately.

Report significant changes in physical condition or behavior; maintain appropriate records.

Assist with transportation of residents for scheduled activities or emergencies; administer first aid when indicated.

Support healthcare needs under medical supervision.

Evacuate residents during emergencies (fire, disaster, drills).

Respond to aggressive behavior and, when required, administer CPR.

Provide direct care and support services, including grooming, bathing, feeding, lifting, and positioning.

Mentor new DSPs; volunteer or serve as shift/team lead (“Charge”) and perform supervisory duties.

Participate in agency‑wide disaster response and continuity of operations plans, potentially on alternate shift patterns or locations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of individual care techniques and developmental treatment programs.

Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Clear verbal and written communication.

Sound judgment for critical incident decision making.

Calm and quick response in emergencies.

Proper body mechanics and lifting techniques.

Ability to administer first aid, CPR, Ukeru, and Safe Use of Restraint (SUR).

Teach, mentor, coach others.

Work effectively within a team.

Basic technical proficiency in individual care and training.

Flexibility in handling work assignments.

Licensure & Certifications

Valid Texas driver’s license or obtain one within 90 days of hire.

Out‑of‑state license holders must provide original certified driving record as per HHSC Fleet Management policy.

Initial Screening Criteria

High school diploma, GED, or 6 months of related work experience.

Preference for 1 year of experience working with people with mental health or intellectual developmental disabilities.

Preference for experience implementing behavior programs.

Experience writing reports is preferred.

Additional Information All applicants must pass fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities). Males 18‑25 must register with Selective Service. Random drug testing applies. Flexibility for overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays.
