Job Description We are seeking enthusiastic, detail-oriented individuals to produce vital records and manage requests for these records in the Vital Statistics Section. The role involves interpreting Texas Vital Statistics statutes, reviewing customer applications for birth, death, marriage, and divorce records, and handling amendments. The position requires advanced customer service duties and coordination with the section’s framework, evaluating processes for effective public service, and serving as a primary contact for VSS to resolve complex customer service problems.
Essential Job Functions
Attend work according to agency leave policy and perform other duties as assigned.
Interpret Texas Vital Statistics statutes, rules, and regulations to approve routine and complex customer applications for issuance or amendment of vital records.
Coordinate and review input, retrieval, document production, and related tasks to ensure accuracy in the Texas Electronic Vital Events Registrar (TxEVER) system.
Provide advanced customer service, including direct support via e‑mail or telephone, and resolve highly complex customer issues using accurate vital statistics terminology.
Develop and conduct training on examining and processing vital statistics applications and customer communications.
Maintain confidential record‑keeping and filing systems per the vital statistics record retention policy.
Perform other duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response, recovery, or COOP activation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of Texas Vital Statistics laws, policies, and regulations.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Windows.
Customer service practices and administrative procedures.
Vital statistics security policies and procedures.
Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for explaining policies and procedures to the public.
Ability to work independently, make quick, rational decisions, and handle confidential records.
Physical ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods.
Capability to read cursive handwriting and compose business correspondence.
Required Initial Screening Criteria
High school graduation or GED plus one year of customer service work experience.
Experience interpreting local, state, or federal regulations and policies.
Experience organizing workload and meeting deadlines.
Experience using computers and software; preferably Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Experience working with confidential records and information.
Additional Information This position is required to be on‑site; daily attendance is essential. The posting will fill multiple vacancies across different teams within Vital Statistics.
