Transfusion Safety Officer Job Summary

The Transfusion Safety Officer (TSO) is responsible for managing the Patient Blood Management Program to ensure that all transfusion‑related activities promote patient safety, comply with all hospital policies and procedures, and meet or exceed the standards of CDPH, Joint Commission, FDA, AABB, and other accreditation and regulatory agencies. The TSO collaborates with all levels of clinical and medical personnel to formulate strategies to evaluate transfusion management processes and provide recommendations for improvement. The TSO will assist in establishing and administering policies, processes, resources, and procedures to support blood management and utilization models that meet regulatory standards and guidelines based on evidence‑based transfusion medicine practices. Additionally, the TSO will develop a process to track, audit, and analyze key performance metrics and recommend actions to reduce costs, improve safety, and enhance treatment efficacy. The TSO serves as a resource to nurses, medical and laboratory staff for blood management and administration issues, prepares and presents educational materials, and manages the annual Program budget and financial reporting. The role requires high autonomy and collaboration with the Blood Bank Medical Director, technical leadership, quality specialists, and clinical leadership to maintain safety protocols and procedures in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

BSN or equivalent nursing degree.

Minimum three (3) years of direct clinical experience in patient transfusion.

Advanced critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills to manage complex information and responsibilities.

Advanced interpersonal skills for collaboration with clinical and technical staff and external regulatory agencies, and for mentoring lower‑level QI staff.

Ability to analyze, evaluate, interpret, and correlate data; prepare reports using applicable software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio); and present reports to departmental and hospital committees.

Preferred Qualifications

Current California State nursing license.

Four or more years of Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine/Blood Infusion experience.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, including leading discussions, delivering presentations, and preparing concise reports and action memos.

Proficient in quality assurance, quality improvement, benchmarking, metrics, data analysis, and audit processes.

Strong strategic thinking, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.

Project management experience with timely completion of quality improvement projects.

Experience collecting data using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), EPIC EMR, RL Solutions.

Knowledge of state, federal, hospital, and departmental regulations and requirements related to Transfusion Services.

Caution and discretion in handling confidential information.
