Job Summary The Ammonia Refrigeration Technician is responsible for the safe operation, inspection, and preventative maintenance of all ammonia refrigeration systems and equipment at the plant. This includes troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining compressors, condensers, and other mechanical components. The role also requires adherence to all applicable safety standards, food safety regulations, and company policies. Knowledge of boiler systems and controls is preferred but not required.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
High school diploma or equivalent (preferred). Refrigeration technical school training (preferred).
At least one year of experience working with ammonia refrigeration systems.
Ability to operate and maintain electrical systems, use hand and power tools, and perform repairs on compressors, condensers, and refrigeration controls.
Valid driver’s license and dependable transportation.
Must pass a pulmonary breathing test and be willing to work nights and most weekends.
Self‑starting, highly motivated, and comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience diagnosing and repairing refrigeration systems.
Knowledge of safety standards and regulations.
Familiarity with boiler operations.
Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to work well within a team.
Key Responsibilities
Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair ammonia refrigeration systems and related equipment.
Identify and correct issues with compressors, condensers, and electrical components.
Perform preventive maintenance and ensure all work complies with USDA and HACCP regulations.
Document all maintenance work accurately.
Maintain safe work areas and respond quickly to equipment failures.
Follow Lockout/Tagout procedures.
Work Environment This position primarily takes place in the production and utility areas. The technician will be exposed to extreme cold temperatures, moving mechanical parts, wet surfaces, and elevated noise levels. This role requires frequent ladder use and may include work on rooftops, lifts, or in confined spaces. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times. No travel is required for this role.
Physical Demands The technician must be able to wear a tool belt weighing up to ten pounds and stand or walk for extended periods of time, often over eight hours per shift. The role requires frequent climbing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and use of hands to operate tools or equipment. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and have the ability to see close‑up, at a distance, and in color. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also necessary for success in this role.
