**The Operating Engineer Group at Colorado Springs Utilities** seeks to strengthen its electrical engineering team with a dedicated engineer experienced in power generation, electrical systems, controls, design, installation, and maintenance. Join our team as a Senior Plant Electrical Engineer supporting power, water, and wastewater plants.
**Relocation assistance** is available.
As a project lead, you will manage large‑scale engineering projects and provide technical guidance to engineers, operations, and maintenance staff.
Key Areas of Focus
Prepare electrical engineering drawings, single‑lines, calculations, studies, and schematics.
Coordinate inspections, tests, and audits of equipment on site.
Design, manage, and complete large, complex projects—developing budgets, estimating costs, tracking changes, monitoring schedules, and conducting post‑project reviews.
Facilitate meetings and collaborate with customers and stakeholders.
Serve as an electrical safety resource.
Analyze and review generator units and electrical equipment conditions.
Develop forecasts and conduct short‑ and long‑range planning—prepare feasibility studies, scope, preliminary designs, estimates, investment, and operational cost.
Perform and manage NERC/WECC compliance; develop new procedures and programs based on regulations.
Prepare, maintain, and submit reports; review engineering reports and documents from outside consultants.
Perform root‑cause analysis and investigations on failed equipment and systems.
Prepare, administer, and review contracts and specifications to ensure compliance with standards.
Evaluate and monitor outside consultants, contractors, and vendors for compliance with specifications and bid proposals.
Who You Are Ideal candidates possess substantial engineering experience and theoretical knowledge of electrical systems—power generation, power distribution, relay protection, and general engineering principles. A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university is required. Understanding of control systems, utility operating policies, and strong project management principles is essential. Strong computer skills, including electronic and online tools, are needed. Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification is preferred. A valid, non‑restricted driver’s license is required.
What Does this Opportunity Offer This role manages engineering responsibilities for fossil fuel, hydro‑electric, combined cycle, bulk energy storage systems, and water/wastewater treatment plants. You will design and construct power plant maintenance and capital improvement projects, become a subject‑matter expert on NERC generation standards, and mentor junior engineers.
Additional exposure to maintenance, troubleshooting, and electrical systems design for capital projects is included.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
Exert up to 20 lbs of force occasionally, and/or 10 lbs frequently, and/or a small amount constantly; job requires walking or standing significantly; light work rating.
Requires reaching, standing, walking, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
