Responsibilities This position is responsible for the management and administration of the Department’s Office of Training and Recruitment and the Green Oaks Training and Professional Development Center, which includes a 180-bed dormitory and a gun range. It oversees all new employee and in‑service training, recruitment and hiring of all new Corrections Officers, and overall recruitment for positions in the Department. The position also serves as Executive Secretary to the Michigan Correctional Officers Training Council and represents the Department on various training councils and committees. It directs and supervises the Training Division Support, In‑service, New Employee, Recruitment and Ordnance Sections.

Education

Possession of a bachelor’s degree in any major.

Education level typically acquired through completion of high school and three years of safety and regulatory or law enforcement experience at the 14 level; or, two years of safety and regulatory or law enforcement supervisory experience at the 15 level, may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.

Experience

Two years of experience as a professional manager or program/staff specialist, or equivalent experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

Knowledge of human resources hiring processes.

Knowledge in the development and delivery of training curriculum.

Ability to supervise, evaluate, and motivate employees.

Thorough knowledge of Department policies, procedures, and practices.

Training Requirements New hires to the MDOC, along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years, will complete Non‑Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in‑person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non‑custody new employee training.

Background Check Certain positions may require a criminal history background check. The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.
