Nature of Work The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for the position of Deputy Sheriff - Law Enforcement with a hire date of June 29, 2026. You must be law‑enforcement certified in Florida to qualify for this position. If you are not yet certified, you are eligible to apply for the Law Enforcement Deputy Recruit position. This position requires that the applicant be at least 21 years of age and meet the standards of the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission as authorized by F.S.S. 943.13. The review and selection process varies by position; in all instances the maximum duration is 22 weeks. Due to different application processes, when applying for any Deputy vacancy, we ask that you limit your application to one position.

Certified Law Enforcement Experience Pay

1 year = $69,649

2 years = $70,345

3 years = $71,223

4 years = $72,114

5+ years = $73,374

Bonuses and Stipends

With three (3) or more years certified law enforcement experience, eligible to receive:

Signing Bonus = $5,000

Relocation Stipend to Pinellas County:

From out‑of‑state = $3,000

From Manatee, Hillsborough, Pasco or Hernando Counties = $500

From all other Florida locations = $1,500

With less than three (3) years certified law enforcement experience, eligible to receive:

Signing Bonus = $3,000

First‑time newly employed law enforcement officers in Florida may be eligible for an additional bonus up to $5,000 through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity while funding is available.

10% shift differential for night shift.

Appearance Requirements Deputies are prohibited from having any tattoo(s), temporary decal(s), and/or body art visible on the head, scalp, face, ears, neck, or hands while wearing the agency uniform.

Key Responsibilities

Escort pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators or suspected law violators.

Patrol assigned areas of the county to preserve public order and tranquility, and to prevent and/or discover commission of crimes.

Make arrests, testify, conduct preliminary and detailed investigations.

Protect crime scene, gather and preserve evidence, take and record testimony; direct and coordinate activities on‑site.

Transport arrested individuals to jail and prepare offense and case reports.

Serve warrants, and other legal processes.

Enforce traffic laws and issue summons to violators; report unsafe road conditions and direct traffic flow when required; investigate traffic accidents.

Participate in work involving juveniles, investigate and refer to juvenile court as necessary.

Assist in training of personnel.

Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Be available to report to work in emergencies or natural disasters.

Participate in recruitment and community relations activities as directed.

Qualifications

Must be at least 21 years of age.

High school graduation or equivalent diploma from an accredited institution.

Certification of completion of law enforcement training required by Florida.

Meet requirements of the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.

Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license (Class E).

Consideration requires a credit check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles and practices.

Knowledge of Pinellas County geography and general roadway system.

Knowledge of general orders, SOPs, applicable laws and regulations.

Knowledge of first aid practices.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.

Ability to cope with stressful situations and perform calmly under strain.

Ability to work closely with others as a team.

Ability to prepare and present clear, accurate, concise reports.

Ability to enforce law with firmness, tact, and impartiality.

Ability to recognize and understand emotional and physical reactions of victims and perpetrators.

Ability to render physical assistance and subdue, restrain, and apprehend violators.

Ability to meet training requirements in firearms, defensive tactics, etc.

Ability to adhere to principles of honesty and integrity.

Ability to comply with the Drug Free Workplace Act.

Physical Abilities

Requires satisfactory medical standards per FDLE form CJSTC 75A.

Visual acuity standard of 20/30 per eye;

If corrective lenses are required, uncorrected vision no worse than 20/100 per eye.

Hearing acuity of single hearing levels: 25 decibels at 500/1000/2000 Hz;

30 decibels at 3000 Hz.

Ability to lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist.

Ability to sit, stand, walk up to 12 hours per day.

Ability to perceive sounds at normal voice range and hear sirens and radios.

Ability to operate authorized firearms accurately from various positions.

Ability to drive a vehicle safely and efficiently.

Ability to use vehicle emergency equipment and mirrors safely.

Ability to identify standard colors used in descriptions.

Ability to perform all job functions without posing direct threat to workplace safety.
