General Functions Under the direction of the Unit Director, the Camp Counselor works with staff and unit leaders in an active outdoor day camp program that aligns with the Hal Welsh East Area Family YMCA objectives. The counselor is individually responsible for 12-16 campers (assistants for >12 campers), participates in water activities with aquatics staff, provides opportunities for confidence building, life skills, friendship development, assists with daily pick-up assignment, and attends at least two overnights when needed.

Responsibilities / Duties / Functions / Tasks

Supervise an assigned group of 12-16 children ensuring enjoyment and safety; supervise sunscreen, bug spray application, hydration; assist with organization of belongings; handle discipline consistently; seek advice from leaders as needed.

Maintain all records for the group including attendance, assignments, overnight attendance, and parent communications.

Assist with daily pick-up procedures and assignments.

Attend and actively participate in staff training, orientation, and weekly staff meetings.

Collaborate with staff to develop a full recreational and educational program each session; assist in specialty areas such as swimming, arts, horseback riding, archery, nature studies, and adventure; assist in special programs assigned by leadership.

Be involved in daily swim program, including supervising and assisting with water activities (female staff required to wear a one-piece bathing suit).

Assist with supervision of lunch period, ensuring each camper eats properly and stays hydrated.

Act professionally at all times: appearance, speech, interaction with campers, families, and staff.

Understand role within team responsible for campers' fun, meaningful, and safe experience.

Assist in end-of-day procedures and assignments.

Work with and assist any CIT/Junior Counselor assigned; provide weekly positive feedback and constructive criticism via evaluation form.

Maintain cleanliness and organization of camp area (pavilion, fields, shed, YMCA building used by camp).

Attend at least one overnight and all family nights.

Be available after camp hours on the last day of the season and participate in close-up of camp.

Perform other tasks as assigned by Unit Director, Program Director, or Camp Director.

Requirements

High school graduate with some college experience preferred but not required.

Prior experience in a camp setting or similar, supervision of children.

Experience working with children in sports, games, music/drama, and/or outdoor activities.

Qualifications

Minimum age: 17 years.

Excellent organizational and communication skills, verbal and written.

Maturity, responsibility, and sincere interest in working with people.

General knowledge and understanding of YMCA, its goals, and mission.

Knowledge of resources for programming ideas and ability to utilize information in program implementation.

Knowledge of age-appropriate activities and expectations for children ages 3-14.

Trainings & Certifications

CPR/AED and/or First Aid certifications preferred (opportunity provided).

Must attend and complete YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and related training at Camp Evergreen Orientation.

Work Environment Duties performed outdoors in a camp group setting; exposure to undesirable working conditions, communicable diseases, risk of injury from children. Employees must follow preventive health policies at all times. Noise level: moderate to above average. Wet/cold, hot/humid climate.
