General Functions

– Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Program Director works with the Camp Director and staff in the development and preparation of activities and events for Camp Evergreen that will meet the objectives of the East Area Family YMCA and will be appropriate for children ages 3 to 14 years.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

– The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

Assist the Camp Director with program planning, including staff training procedures and the development of new programs.

Assist with interviewing, hiring, and managing of Program Area staff, and others as needed.

Assist with the Camp Evergreen Meet and Greet and pre‑camp promotional events.

Assist with planning and leading the staff orientation, staff meetings, and leadership meetings.

Supervise and meet with CITs each week, when needed, and lead a structured program that builds leadership skills and self‑confidence.

Provide leadership and supervision of Program Area staff; set clear expectations, recognize achievements, and redirect as needed; assist with problem solving and decision making while ensuring a healthy, safe, and fun environment for campers at all times.

Lead during dismissal, overseeing parent pick‑up and PM care.

Meet with all camp staff at least once a week and assist the Camp Director in leading these meetings.

Attend weekly team meetings with the Camp Director, Program Director, and Aquatics Director regarding camp planning, issues, and problem solving.

Assist with parent complaints and ensure proper customer service.

Be available to work within the hours of Camp Iroquois and follow a schedule outlined by the Camp Director.

Supervise the planning of special activities/events with unit directors and other staff, including coordination of group and equipment usage.

Maintain basic supply inventory and notify the Camp Director of any needs.

Help the Assistant Camp Director organize lost and found.

Produce a newsletter per session that highlights the session’s activities and pertinent information for parents; newsletters must be ready for distribution by the afternoon of the first day of every session.

Act as a substitute counselor or area specialist when necessary.

Supervise operation of overnights, special days, large events, and off‑season programming with support from the Camp Director.

Plan and supervise the daily camp welcome (council ring).

Be available for AM Care or PM Care Property Supervision as needed.

Be available after camp hours on the last day of the season and participate in camp close‑up.

Perform all other tasks as assigned by the Camp Director.

Experience and Education

– Bachelor’s Degree in a child‑related field or equivalent experience working with children in recreation and/or education; 1 year of prior experience in a camp setting.

Requirements

Must be 21 years of age.

Excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Maturity, responsibility, and a sincere interest in working with people.

Knowledge of YMCA goals and mission.

Knowledge of resources for programming ideas and skills to implement them.

Knowledge of age‑appropriate activities and expectations for children ages 3 to 14.

Trainings & Certifications

CPR/AED and RTE certifications required (opportunities provided).

Must attend and complete YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and related training at Camp Iroquois Orientation.

– Duties are performed outdoors in a camp group setting; employees may be exposed to undesirable working conditions, communicable infectious diseases, and the risk of injury from children. The noise level is moderate to above average, with frequent exposure to wet/cold or hot/humid climate.
