Job Summary Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the Sports Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, leading, and overseeing a variety of sports programs offered through the Parks and Recreation Department. Programs may include youth, teen, and adult sports classes, camps, clinics, and recreational leagues. The instructor creates a positive, inclusive, and safe environment that encourages skill development, teamwork, and enjoyment of physical activity for all participants.
Pay The hourly rate for the position is $15.00 - $25.00 DOQ
Work Schedule Seasonal, varies by season and program schedule (afternoons, evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays). Hours per week: typically, 5-25 depending on program needs.
Duties and Responsibilities - Essential Functions
Plan, lead, and instruct sports programs such as basketball, soccer, baseball/softball, flag football, volleyball, pickleball, or multi-sport activities.
Develop age-appropriate lesson plans and practice sessions that focus on skill building, sportsmanship, and fun that meet the class, program, or league objectives.
Supervise participants to ensure safety, proper conduct, and adherence to facility and program rules.
Set up, inspect, and take down equipment before and after classes, camps, or leagues.
Demonstrate proper techniques and fundamentals in a clear and engaging manner.
Communicate effectively and professionally with participants, parents, guardians, and staff.
Assist with league operations including officiating, scorekeeping, and scheduling support as assigned.
Welcome participants, take attendance at each class and maintain accurate class lists.
Maintain program records, participation data, and incident reports.
Respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies, following department procedures.
Respond to participant inquiries and resolve conflicts/complaints in a professional and customer-focused manner.
Strong knowledge of youth and adult athletic leagues, sports rules and regulations.
Represent the Parks and Recreation Department in a positive and professional manner at all times.
Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Thorough knowledge of the program or activity being taught or played.
Thorough knowledge of program development.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of general recreation sports programming.
Good knowledge of pertinent safety precautions:
Work hours designated by Recreation Supervisor.
Employee is expected to be on duty whenever the need exists.
Attend Special Events as needed.
Ability to cooperate with and interpret Department philosophies in relation to governmental, public, and private groups and agencies and to the general public.
Ability to work harmoniously with fellow employees, patrons, community groups and other units of local government.
Ability to work independently in day-to-day operations with general direction from the Recreation Supervisor.
Ability to work in a team atmosphere, promoting positive work relationships with both internal and external customers.
Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities to perform required work.
Ability to communicate effectively with fellow staff and the public both orally and in writing.
Capacity to be self-motivated and achieve goals with minimal supervision or direction.
Ability to maintain self-control and composure in difficult situations.
Ability to follow directions and communicate in English verbally and in writing and to read and understand materials printed in English.
Capacity to utilize computer skills, including demonstrated proficiency in work processing and basic spreadsheet and database applications.
Capacity to proactively troubleshoot, problem solve and make sound judgements with respect to confidentiality.
CPR, AED and First Aid certifications within six (6) months of employment, instructor level preferred.
Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions
Ability to stand, run, bend, and demonstrate sports movements for extended periods.
Ability to lift and carry sports equipment and set up and take down (up to 25 pounds).
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor recreation settings, sometimes in varying weather conditions.
Exposure to noise distractions from employees or equipment operation in adjacent work areas.
Exposure to chronic infectious disease while performing routine first aid or emergency procedures.
Protective clothing and equipment is required as it pertains to the particular job duty:
Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Non-Latex gloves
Sunscreen
Sunglasses and hat
Ability to work extra hours to accomplish and complete high volume of work.
Occasional exposure to natural and potentially extreme weather conditions while supervising programs or attending job related activities at locations away from municipal facilities.
