Job Overview The Part‑time Transit Driver operates Transit Department vehicles on fixed routes or schedules, or provides door‑to‑door transportation for eligible patrons. This role requires safe driving skills, exceptional customer service, and reliability in serving passengers. Part‑time Transit Drivers may also handle administrative, dispatch, Medicaid dispatch, customer service, paratransit, ticketing, and freight operations.

Responsibilities

Operate Department vehicles—including buses, vans, and paratransit vans—for timely, reliable, and safe transportation.

Operate wheelchair lifts and assist passengers, including securing wheelchairs.

Collect fares and/or check passes, vouchers, or transportation passes.

Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle checks (fuel, fluids, tires, mechanical issues).

Answer passenger questions and provide fare, route, schedule, transfers, and map information.

Maintain route logs, reports, and documentation in accordance with City policies and safety practices.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Department.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.

Class B CDL with air‑brake and passenger endorsements required.

One (1) year of large vehicle driving experience preferred.

Knowledge of vehicle operation, transit routes, schedules, fares, ADA compliance, OSHA regulations, and city safety policies.

Skill to operate all vehicles, conduct safety inspections, assist passengers, operate a computer and two‑way radio, read schedules and maps, maintain records, and communicate effectively in English.

Classification Requirements The role requires the knowledge, skill, and ability to simultaneously perform the essential functions. Applicants should possess a combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Physical Requirements Frequent standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, use of hands to handle materials or tools, and operating a motor vehicle. Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Adequate visual acuity and hearing capacity are required.
