Job Responsibilities

Operates 5‑yard CDL standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling during shoulder work, ditching, hi/lo repairs, pothole patching, paving, A1 treatment, and other operational tasks with materials such as limestone, rock, fill dirt, cement, pipe, asphalt construction materials, and debris. Assists in the operation of heavier equipment such as tandem dump trucks, front‑end loaders, self‑propelled belt loaders, zipper, bobcat, steel‑wheel and pneumatic rollers, motor graders, snow plow with attachment, sand spreader (to move snow and ice from highways & bridges), specialized mowers and backhoes. Performs duties using manual labor in tasks such as clearing right‑of‑ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, full‑depth milling, base repairs, bridge repairs, paving driveways, removing dead animals, litter control, and laying sideline/cross‑line pipe. Assists with emergency operations during and after normal working hours. Repairs potholes and base surface failures of roadway using hand tools such as shovel, pick, rake, and asphalt lute to level asphalt as needed. Operates and maintains small equipment, hand/electric and gas power tools in maintenance activities including chain saw for cutting trees on right‑of‑way, weed eater, shovel, rake, tamp, lute board, wrenches, etc. Performs manual labor constructing catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs and raised median, laying pipes for driveways and other drainage structures, repairing shoulders, clearing right‑of‑ways, and repairing bridges. Performs, conducts, and documents pre‑operation preventive maintenance on vehicle/equipment inspections as outlined in equipment specifications. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic and protect workers, general public, and equipment. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include availability for extended hours or 12‑hour shifts. Assists in operating a street sweeper (motorized) to sweep and clean roads. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, traversing rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental‑related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
