The California Independent System Operator (ISO) manages the flow of electricity across high‑voltage transmission lines that power 80% of California’s grid. As a neutral grid operator, the ISO ensures reliable delivery of power 24/7, supports a competitive wholesale market, and provides equal access to 25,865 circuit‑miles of lines.

Operations Trainee – Training Program Under the close supervision of the Manager, the Operations Trainee participates in a structured 6‑12 month training program covering Bulk Electric System (BES) Operations, Market Operations, and Generation Fundamentals. The trainee will engage in classroom instruction, power system simulations, on‑site visits, and hands‑on experience in a control room setting.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Attend formal classroom and on‑the‑job training, including power system simulation and ISO market operations.

Complete training modules and required reading within specified timeframes.

Qualify on written and performance exams to demonstrate knowledge in each study area.

Participate in supplemental programs and events as directed by management.

Apply knowledge of renewable resources, interconnection, and market operations to support reliability and business objectives.

Review, analyze, and respond to system conditions that maintain the reliability and economic efficiency of the BES at the control center level.

Obtain NERC Reliability Coordinator Operator Certification prior to program completion.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or equivalent technical training.

One or more years of related technical experience; no direct control room experience required.

Strong aptitude in advanced mathematics, technical systems, and analytical problem‑solving.

Excellent communication, multitasking, and teamwork skills; ability to work under high‑pressure conditions.

Must obtain required NERC Reliability Coordinator Operator Certification during training.

Compensation & Benefits The Operations Trainee earns $45.91 per hour. Trainees who already hold NERC RC Certification receive a $48.21 per hour rate.
