Job Summary: English Supplemental Instruction Peer Tutor work closely with a writing instructor to mentor, tutor, and support students in ENGL 0900 (Integrated Reading and Writing I), ENGL 0990 (Integrated Reading and Writing II), or ENGL 1010 (Introduction to Writing). Peer tutors work with students in a classroom or online course, offer mentoring hours outside of class, and help students work toward preparing for or completing Written Communication degree requirements.
Essential Responsibilities And Duties
Provide reading, writing, college success, and learning strategies support for students in writing courses
Attend an orientation, participate in regular training sessions, and complete additional online peer educator training
Attend classes (for in-person sections) or participate actively in Canvas activities (for online sections)
Facilitate small group learning activities
Hold weekly student support hours outside of class
Participate in weekly meetings with an assigned instructor or peer mentor trainer
Complete other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Knowledge of how to apply reading, writing, and learning strategies to college courses
Ability to explain reading and writing strategies to other students
Ability to manage time for college coursework and explain time management strategies to other students
Ability to provide peers with feedback on their writing
Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College
Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities
Minimum Qualifications
2.5 college GPA or higher
Successful completion of ENGL 1010 (or an equivalent writing course) with a grade of B or higher
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with tutoring, peer mentoring, and/or completion of English 1810: Mentoring Writers (or an equivalent course)
