Fish and Wildlife Technician I (Interim) Location: Louisville, KY Pay: $13.76–$20.64 per hour

Join us in the exciting, innovative, and rewarding environment of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR)! This interim position performs beginning‑level technical work in various locations for fisheries, Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), habitat management programs, or research programs. It is a temporary role of less than nine (9) months and exempt from classified service under KRS 18A.115. Our Fish and Wildlife Technicians I are eligible for paid leave, paid holidays, and employee discounts.

Responsibilities

Transport fish and wildlife throughout the state and release them into appropriate habitat.

Feed, water, and care for fish and wildlife while in agency care.

Perform maintenance work on equipment, facilities, and grounds.

Assist biologists and other professionals in executing their duties.

Interact with the public as assigned by the supervisor.

Learn to operate heavy and technical equipment (tractor, mowers, other agricultural equipment).

Mow, weed, and perform landscaping tasks.

Collect data concerning fish and wildlife and prepare reports.

Assist in soil and water tests and cultivate agricultural crops to serve as food for wildlife.

Assist in the creation and/or restoration of terrestrial and aquatic habitat through environmentally accepted construction and development practices.

Assist in the identification and marking of habitat boundaries and department‑held lands.

Working Conditions Travel, extreme weather conditions, heavy equipment, and wildlife may pose hazards. Majority of time may be spent working outside in inclement weather. Exposure to insects, snakes, and other harmful animals is possible. The position requires the ability to bend, stoop, climb, crawl, and walk. Ideal candidates possess a strong work ethic, work well with a team, are self‑starters, and are adaptable and flexible.

Substitute Education for Experience

– None.

Substitute Experience for Education

– Experience in fisheries or wildlife management will substitute for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
