THE POSITION Coastline College is seeking a full‑time, equity‑minded, tenure‑track faculty member in English as a Second Language (ESL) beginning Fall 2026. The primary teaching assignment involves all areas of ESL. The role also includes curriculum and program development; in department, division, and college committees; leadership within the department and institution; collaboration across disciplines; leveraging student support resources; participation in ongoing professional development.

The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off‑campus and is subject to change as needed. THE COLLEGE Coastline College serves a diverse student population of approximately 19,361 students across multiple instructional modalities, including online and in‑person formats. In the 2024‑25 academic year, the College awarded 1,225 degrees and 610 certificates while achieving strong end‑of‑term retention and course success rates.

The College’s student body reflects the dynamic racial and ethnic diversity of the region. Of enrolled students, 28.9% identify as Hispanic Latinx, 23.0% as Asian, 7.7% as Black African American, 25.3% as White, 4.2% as Two or More Races, 0.5% as American Indian Alaska Native, and 0.5% as Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander. An additional 1.5% identify as Filipino, while 25.3% of students are reported as unknown or unreported.

THE DEPARTMENT Coastline College’s ESL Department includes both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Language Learning (ELL) programs.

The ESL Program provides a comprehensive, academic English program for non‑native English speakers who seek to improve skills in reading, writing, grammar, listening, and speaking. The program prepares non‑native English speakers for regular collegiate classes, college degrees, and vocational training programs. It is also suitable for those who wish to improve English language skills for employment in the United States.

The ELL Program offers courses emphasizing general life skills and highly specialized courses for non‑native English speakers who wish to improve English language skills in a non‑academic, real‑world environment.

The ESL/ELL Department is located at the Westminster‑Le‑Jao Campus.

Faculty have the opportunity to enhance classroom methods during two professional development days per academic year, which include learning sessions that support student success.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT The Coast Community College District is a multi‑college district that includes Coastline Community College, Golden West College, and Orange Coast College. The three colleges offer programs in transfer, general education, occupational/technical education, community services, and student support services. Coastline, Golden West, and Orange Coast colleges enroll more than 60,000 students each year in more than 300 degree and certificate programs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Provide instruction in ESL and ELL courses in accordance with established course outlines.

Demonstrate use of effective teaching methods and materials appropriate to the course, discipline, modality, and students.

Maintain currency within the assigned discipline(s).

Demonstrate verbal and written communication proficiency with students, colleagues, and staff.

Comply with course outline requirements and student learning outcome assessment and reporting.

Maintain regular and timely office hours.

Ensure confidential, accurate maintenance of student records.

Adhere to College and departmental requirements consistent with applicable bargaining agreement.

Demonstrate appropriate respect for students by demonstrating the following characteristics: patience, fairness, promptness in evaluating and discussing student work, sensitivity and responsiveness to the needs of individual students; support of the diversity of our students, colleagues, and staff in actions, words, and teaching and learning methods.

Demonstrate respect for colleagues and the teaching profession characterized by ethical conduct, cooperation, and commitment to the College and the profession.

Provide leadership in development and revision of ESL curriculum to promote timely completion and meet evolving needs.

Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation.

Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.

Fulfill professional responsibilities of a full‑time faculty member, including teaching, record keeping, grading, office hours, and participation in departmental and college activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis, OR

Bachelor’s in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND master’s in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language.

Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.

Evidence of demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, geographic, gender, gender identity, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Willingness to examine and re‑mediate instructional and classroom practices to effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.

Experience and skill with addressing equity issues in the classroom.

Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in ESL, particularly as it relates to the relevance of ESL to students’ lives, interests, and communities.

Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within ESL courses and classrooms.

Evidence of an ability to self‑reflect and respond to an evidenced‑based assessment of student learning.

Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of the district.

Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.

Ability to work with computers and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on‑campus and online courses (where academically appropriate).

Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
