Minimum Experience/Education High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Preferred Experience and Education
Bachelor’s Degree in a safety-related discipline, or a combination of education and safety-related experience.
Documented evidence of attendance at a technical school or community college with training in occupational and life safety and three (3) years of experience working with fire alarms and life safety systems.
Position Overview This position is primarily responsible to operate, maintain, coordinate the repair and upgrade of the University’s fire alarms, sprinkler, fire extinguishers, life safety and hood systems. This position also performs building inspections and construction monitoring of all new and renovated building construction on campus.
The position must effectively communicate regulations in a concise and accurate manner, complete duties in a responsible manner, establish and recommend procedural changes to ensure safety standards and methods are applied, and determine corrective actions when unsafe conditions are identified. This position works with a diverse group including faculty, staff, students, the public as well as external agency representatives and must manage sensitive matters in a professional manner.
The purpose of the Environmental Health and Safety Office is to provide a variety of Environmental Health and Safety services to all administrative units, student programs and all academic schools and departments. Services include risk assessment, response to on-campus calls regarding fire alarm malfunctions, installation and service, and to reduce the actual loss of labor and equipment resources in the administration of services.
Work Hours 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Monday – Friday
Work Arrangement On-site (Employees are primarily in the office and/or have a critical job requirement that requires dedicated office space on-site).
Key Responsibilities Technical Knowledge
Conducts structured life safety inspections as assigned to maintain compliance with OSHA, DENR, and DOI regulations.
Responds to panel notification of alarms and trouble signals.
Insures all National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) test requirements and provides the correct documentation.
Develops and maintains safety projects and programs and makes recommendations to the Safety Director concerning the need for new policies and revisions of existing policies.
Monitors and maintains contracts for life safety services performed through this department including fire alarm, sprinkler, suppression, and shutter doors maintenance and testing.
Inspections
Performs general inspections of buildings and grounds in order to make hazardous assessments and recommendations; submits and tracks corrections.
Inspects assigned structures on a monthly basis to assure the continuous operation of life safety systems.
Inspects fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.
Communication
Provides Life Safety training to University staff, faculty and students.
Provides written/verbal communication to University community effectively.
Responds as the primary response to life safety emergencies occurring on university property.
Provides back-up support in responding to environmental safety emergencies as assigned.
Maintains telephonic or radio communication with the office throughout the workday and when on-call.
