Under the direction of the Superintendent or General Foreman, a Bus Serviceperson is responsible for checking and maintaining all NJ TRANSIT buses for daily services. Report any damages or repairs needed as directed by the supervisor.
Roles and Responsibilities
Check bus fluids and maintain required levels
Change fluids
Clean inside and around buses
Shift and drive buses in and around the garage
Steam engines
Change tires (utilizing the appropriate equipment)
Complete forms required in carrying out duties of the position
Training NJ TRANSIT’s Surface Transit Training Department offers comprehensive job-related training for all Servicepersons new hires. This may include, but is not guaranteed, support in obtaining a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) or a Commercial Driver License (CDL).
Qualifications
Light professional mechanical experience preferred; diesel experience a plus but not required
Be twenty-one years (21) years of age
Possess a valid NJ Driver’s License with three (3) years of driving experience
Must be eligible to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement or possess a valid NY/PA CDL with Passenger and Airbrake endorsement
Be able to work any shift in keeping with seniority‑based scheduling. Hours vary depending on the Bus Garage
Be able to pass the pre‑employment physical and background checks
Have a good driving record with less than five (5)

Signing Bonus : $6,000 Signing Bonus for CDL A or B License Holders (must have air brake and passenger endorsement) at time of hire
$3,000 Signing Bonus for all newly hired Servicepersons

Assistance obtaining your CDL (for NJ driving only)
