Job Description Tractor Trailer Operator

Monday - Friday

2nd shift (2:30pm to 10:30pm)

Experience Required GENERAL SUMMARY:

Most of job functions are performed outside, therefore this employee is exposed to all elements throughout the year. Pulls full trailers from the door and replaces with an empty. Responsibilities could also include taking loads of Parcel Post shipments to Post Office.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Checks tractor daily. Keeps correct amount of fuel in the tanks; checks and adds oil to the crank case as needed; checks radiator for fullness of anti‑freeze; checks the battery for the need of water; checks tires for proper air pressure; checks the hydraulic fifth wheel for proper amount of oil. Reports any minor or major repair needed in order to keep the truck in good operating condition at all time.

Makes list of all trailers spotted at dock doors‑compares to trailer door listing. Informs Supervisor of any discrepancy.

After a trailer is loaded, move trailer from dock, close trailer doors, apply seal, and move to trailer pool. Move a predetermined empty trailer back to the dock door. Give trailer card to OS&D Clerk to update system.

Use yard tractor with trailer to take Parcel Post shipments to the Post Office. Assists in the loading and off‑loading the baskets (approximate weight 1,300 lbs).

May be required to go to outside warehouse to take empty trailer or to bring back a full one.

May be required to perform the functions of a Line Dispatcher.

May be required to perform the functions of a Material Handler.

Works under the direction of the Supervisor.

Changes may occur in the hours and essential functions due to availability of personnel.

Must be physically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle as prescribed by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Section 391.41 Subject D. This includes an examination by a competent medical examiner and a certificate stating he is physically qualified to operate a motor vehicle.

Position requires individual to enter/exit truck cab several times in a shift.

Primary job functions are performed outside except when performing line dispatcher/material handler job functions which are performed on shipping dock.

Education Required High School

Required Length & Type Of Experience Previous driving experience - CDL Class A License Required (Automatic and Manual Transmission)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Must be qualified to operate a tractor‑trailer unit as an over‑the‑road driver in compliance with Department of Transportation Regulations, CDL license.
