$37,838 – $50,848 per year

This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.
Job Summary This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public. It includes responding to incidents that result in roadway closures and performing regular scheduled maintenance on the roadway, while being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public.
Job Duties Highway Operations Worker
– entry level. Performs motorized vehicle and equipment operation, pavement care and preservation, landscape care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, and vehicle and equipment care.
Highway Operations Tech 1
– apprentice. Handles advanced motorized vehicle and equipment operation, pavement care and preservation, landscape care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, and vehicle and equipment care.
Highway Operations Tech 2
– intermediate. Performs a broad scope of intermediate‑level highway operational duties and lead responsibilities, including operation of vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, landscape care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, vehicle and equipment care, plus scheduling, assigning, inspecting, training, and guiding staff.
Highway Operations Tech 3
– senior. Responsible for high‑level highway operation duties and supervisory responsibilities, including all tasks above, plus management, supervision, scheduling, inspecting, and training of personnel.
Qualifications
Highway Operations Worker: 6 months roadway/highway experience; ability to operate motorized vehicles and equipment; signing/striping; pavement care; movement of 50 lbs.
Highway Operations Tech 1: 1 year related experience.
Highway Operations Tech 2: 2 years related experience.
Highway Operations Tech 3: 3 years related experience.
Selectiveness/Requirements
Highway Operations Worker Requirements:
Obtain Arizona CDL Class “A” permit within 90 days of hire and a full license within 6 months.
Highway Operations Tech 1–3 Requirements: Arizona Class “A” CDL (manual or automatic) and (N) tanker endorsement required; additional endorsements may be required.
Pre‑Employment Requirements
Register with FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
Authorize ADOT to conduct limited CDL queries for employment consideration.
Respond to emergency call‑outs 24/7; must reach the maintenance yard within 30 minutes.
Work may involve extremes of cold/heat, rugged terrain, high‑speed traffic, and time away from base.
Must lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
