Responsibilities
Assist with installation, alteration, addition, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems, lighting controls, access control, building security, fire alarm, and building automation controls.
Interpret and use schematics and blueprint drawings to complete conduit, wiring, and device termination.
Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.
Rotate on a scheduled on‑call duty; after‑hours work may be required.
Higher level electricians (II, III, IV) will: work more independently, test electrical systems, confirm scope, schedule and budget, coordinate with vendors, provide as‑built documentation, train and mentor staff, and assist with project development and safety coordination.
Qualifications Minimum qualifications (Electrician I–IV)
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to lift 50 lbs, work from a ladder or aerial equipment, and be available by cell phone for emergencies.
Valid driver's license meeting university eligibility requirements.
Must be available for weekend rotations and after‑hours on‑call schedule.
Electrician I
Comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
Good communication, time‑management, organization, and attention to detail.
Familiar with tools and machinery.
State of Nebraska Apprentice Electrical License or willingness to obtain one.
Electrician II
Minimum 4 years experience working with electrical and low‑voltage systems.
Strong analytical, reasoning, and communication skills.
Understanding of building, construction, electrical systems, codes, and NFPA 70/72.
Basic computer skills and ability to read blueprints.
Proficiency with testing devices (ohmmeters, voltmeters, ammeters).
State of Nebraska Journeyman Electrical License.
Electrician III
Minimum 4 years experience with commercial electrical and low‑voltage systems.
Ability to comprehend complex technical information and manage multiple projects.
Strong documentation and communication skills.
Knowledge of building, construction, electrical systems, codes, and NFPA 70/72.
Electrician IV
Minimum 1 year experience training, mentoring, and/or overseeing others.
Intermediate computer skills and knowledge of card access, fire alarm, lighting control, and HVAC controls.
Experience with installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems.
Leadership in project development, safety coordination, and as‑built documentation.
Preferred qualifications
Associate’s degree in electrical technology or related field.
Electrician I
1 + year experience with electrical and low‑voltage systems.
Basic computer skills, familiarity with EMCS and CMMS.
Proficient in Microsoft Office.
Knowledge of building, electrical, and fire codes.
Electrician II
Completion of UNL and BSM required training courses preferred.
Intermediate computer skills; proficient in EMCS, CMMS, access controls, and fire alarm interface programs.
State of Nebraska Contractor Electrical License.
Electrician III
6 + years experience with commercial electrical and low‑voltage systems.
1 + year experience training, mentoring, and/or overseeing others.
Electrician IV
2 + years training, mentoring, and/or overseeing others.
