Job Summary Duties include: performing the inspection, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The position requires participation in a rotation based on a 24‑hour call‑back program with a response time of 30 minutes. Employees must be able to work at elevated heights in stressful situations and be available for overtime during hazardous weather events, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Job Duties Signal/Lighting/Electrical Technician 1 (SLATE 1): $25.43/hr. Grade 18 Employee performs a broad scope of basic-level electrical, electronic, and/or mechanical duties related to the inspection, installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and ITS, and related record-keeping. Operates motorized vehicles and powered/non‑powered equipment. Performs contract management, quality assurance, and record keeping. Coordinates with other crew members. Performs emergency repairs on traffic signals, roadway lighting, and ITS.
Signal/Lighting/Electrical Technician 2 (SLATE 2): $27.22/hr. Grade 19 Employee performs a broad scope of intermediate-level electrical, electronic, and/or mechanical duties related to the inspection, installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and ITS, and related record-keeping. Operates motorized vehicles and powered/non‑powered equipment. Performs contract management, quality assurance, and record keeping. Coordinates with crew members. Performs emergency repairs on traffic signals, roadway lighting, and ITS.
Signal/Lighting/Electrical Technician 3 (SLATE 3): $30.05/hr. Grade 20 Employee performs a broad scope of advanced-level electrical, electronic, and/or mechanical duties related to the inspection, installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and ITS, and related record-keeping. Operates motorized vehicles and powered/non‑powered equipment. Performs contract management, quality assurance, and record keeping. Coordinates with crew members. Performs emergency repairs on traffic signals, roadway lighting, and ITS. Lead duties include providing advice, resolving problems, scheduling work, approving documentation, determining alternatives, training lower-level technicians, and evaluating technical skills.

Selective Preference(s)
SLATE 1 – High school diploma/GED; entry-level electrical/electronics background and troubleshooting; ability to obtain a Class A CDL
SLATE 2 – High school diploma/GED; foreman-level electrical/electronics background; one year of experience equivalent to SLATE 1
SLATE 3 – High school diploma/GED; foreman-level electrical/electronics background; one year of experience equivalent to SLATE 2
Pre-Employment Requirements This position requires driving or use of a vehicle. Employees must possess a current, valid class‑appropriate driver’s license and complete all required training and checks. Valid state‑issued driver’s license is required. For systems positions, a valid CDL permit is required at time of appointment and an Arizona Class A commercial driver’s license within six months. Candidates must complete and sign Part 1 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at interview and Part 2 for reference checks. A 39‑month driving record review is required. Newly hired state employees must complete E‑Verify.
