Job Overview Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Operates motorized equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges, or the movement of materials and supplies used to perform these maintenance activities. Additionally, provides skilled manual labor such as patching roadway failures, cleaning ditches, installing driveways, removing fallen trees, performing vegetation management, repairing and maintaining signs, and setting forms for concrete work.

Key Responsibilities

Operate medium‑sized equipment such as belt loaders, rollers, skid steers, tractors and trailers, and heavy equipment including front‑end loaders, motor graders, backhoes, and specialized slope mowers.

Perform manual labor for patching, ditch cleaning, sign installation and maintenance, concrete pouring, curb and gutter repair, and other related tasks.

Conduct safety inspections and daily preventive maintenance on all assigned equipment, ensuring proper lubrication, coolant, oil levels, and tire pressure.

Operate portable tank‑mounted salt brine anti‑icing equipment, snow plows, and sand spreaders to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges.

Assist in emergency or inclement weather operations, available for on‑call rotations and extended hours.

Qualifications

Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved equivalent.

Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.

Must attain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.

Physical Demands The essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Work requires walking for extended periods on rough and uneven terrain, proximity to moving traffic, exposure to weather, noise, oil and grease, and working outside normal schedules during inclement weather or emergencies.
