As a Field Service Technician, you will assist with on‑site installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases. You will have direct, face‑to‑face contact with our customers and be expected to proactively sell TDS services and products. Services include Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high‑speed networks. This position is customer‑focused, identifies needs, provides communication solutions, and seeks sales opportunities while educating customers.
Responsibilities
Assist with and perform on‑site installation, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone equipment, customer premise equipment, video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products for new and existing customers.
Identify defective cable location using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, or customer cable. Locate cable and fiber for customer requests or construction needs.
Operate construction equipment and climb poles. Locate, identify, and mark company underground facilities to prevent damage and keep an orderly log of all locate requests.
Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
Provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections. Respond to trouble dispatches.
Support record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
Provide excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers.
Gain working knowledge of RUS standards and grounding practices for splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment.
Qualifications Required Qualifications
Valid driver’s license.
Follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business and customer needs.
Other Qualifications
Successfully complete customer‑specific background check upon hire.
Available for on‑call/standby responsibilities; occasional travel and willingness to work overtime.
Successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
Maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW of >10,000 lbs.
A+ certification and computer networking experience.
Knowledge of telecommunication products and services (e.g., inside wiring, fiber optic transmission, PBX, VOIP, etc.).
Proficiency with computer applications (databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel).
Work independently with little or no supervision.
Customer service and sales skills with effective verbal and written communication.
Strong organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
Operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Regularly required to sit, stand, write, operate a computer keyboard, standard office equipment, and telephone. Frequently communicate with customers. Move around and reach for items, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Maintain balance or climb. Frequently lift 50 pounds and occasionally lift 100 pounds. Required vision abilities include close and distance vision, color, peripheral, and depth perception. Work outdoors, in mechanical/equipment rooms, and possible extreme weather conditions. Exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.
