Description Overview:

The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. Founded in 1895, NYPL is the nation’s largest public library system, featuring a unique combination of 88 neighborhood branches and four scholarly research centers, bringing together an extraordinary richness of resources and opportunities available to all.

NYPL seeks an experienced security professional for the position of Library Investigator. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing investigations of alleged criminal and/or other conduct which has or may result in a negative impact on NYPL. This includes employee or non‑employee criminal behavior as it relates to NYPL, as well as conduct that violates NYPL policy.

We are looking for someone we can count on to:

Own:

Security inside of assigned branches

Teach:

Staff and contract security to stay safe during the working day

Learn:

The security needs of the assigned library staff

Improve:

Relationships with local first responders as well as safety within assigned branches

Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month , this person will:

Learn CCTV and NYPL investigations

3 months , this person will:

Develop relationships with NYPL leadership and staff

6 months and beyond , this person will:

Develop relationships with the first responder community

Responsibilities

Provide field security investigations for incidents involving any crimes or violations of NYPL rules and regulations committed on library property

Prepare and record incident reports of activities and investigations

Visit branch libraries, conduct security surveys, and collaborate effectively with the library managers and other library staff

Assist in the supervision of contractual guard services to ensure compliance

Must be available to respond to emergencies after hours and available for security coverage at after‑hour Library functions

May be required to work at any NYPL facility

Collaborate effectively with the NYPD and other city agencies

Serve as a liaison between NYPL and first responders (NYPD, FDNY, EMS)

Perform related duties as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills Required Education & Certifications:

Associate Degree required or equivalent experience

Valid Driver's license

Required Experience:

7+ years of law enforcement experience

5+ years of investigative experience

Required Skills:

Ability to maintain professionalism and accountability

Strong customer service skills

Ability to work efficiently both independently and collaboratively

Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills

Proficient with security technology (CCTV, alarm violations, access control, and camera surveillance)

Proficient with computer technology
