The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting Virginia's health. It is made up of a statewide central office in Richmond and 32 local health districts.
As part of the Virginia Department of Health, Hampton and Peninsula Health Districts (HPHD) are two health districts serving the residents of the Cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, and the Counties of James City and York.

The Certified Nurse Practitioner will play a critical role in improving health outcomes for our communities while leading a committed and passionate team. The role requires strong clinical and medical decision‑making skills, proficient written and verbal communication, effective interviewing and counseling skills, as well as comfort with pediatrics, family planning, gynecological services, STI and infectious disease management and adult health services.
Performs patient care as a nurse practitioner with limited or no on‑site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, and develop and implement care plans including the administration of medication and case management. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code.
VDH requires all Health‑Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one‑time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus‑diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology Ability to perform and interpret physical assessments, obtain medical history, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses and plan of care and provide health education to clients Ability to develop patient management plans; excellent clinical judgement with ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, patients and the public; ability to participate in educational and professional programs CPR/BLS certification Additional Considerations
Prior public health or community health with significant clinical experience in prenatal, STI, family planning, pediatrics and family practice preferred Special Instructions
