Public Works Maintenance Person I
SUMMARY
To accomplish the repair, maintenance or installation of water and sanitary sewer mains, valves and water service and sewer service connections and perform other public works functions.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED Work is performed under the general supervision of the DPW Maintenance Person III or their designee.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED None.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.
Assists in the repair of malfunctions in the water distribution system, travelling throughout the Township inspecting water meters, service lines, mains and valves to determine problems.
Installs and repairs water meters using hand tools and special gauges.
Turns water on and off in cases of emergency, disconnected or vacationing customers during the installation of new lines.
Participates in the repair and maintenance of new and existing water mains, manholes, fire hydrants, sewer lines, etc., inspecting taps and running new service lines when necessary.
Performs clean up duties at work projects, filling in holes, recovering or patching roadways along with landscaping where necessary.
Operates a variety of tools and equipment such as air compressor, metal locator, leak detector and various hand tools required to perform assigned tasks.
Read water meters.
Address billing and customer inquiries as required.
Operate a truck or backhoe in the removal or hauling of materials, snow plowing, digging or backfilling trenches for concrete or metal pipe, or loading trucks.
Perform related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, QUALIFICATIONS AND KSA'S FOR EMPLOYMENT All of the following functions, qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities are essential. An employee in this class must have the following upon application:
Reasonable knowledge
of the methods, materials and equipment used in water and sewer system construction, repair and maintenance work.
Reasonable knowledge
of the methods and equipment used in making water and sewer connections, in tapping mains and installing and repairing meters, valves and hydrants.
Reasonable knowledge
of water and sewer system layout, cleaning and service operations.
Knowledge
of relevant safety procedures and practices regarding maintenance and repair work.
Ability
to read and interpret maps and sketches of water and sewer distribution systems.
Ability
to work effectively with the public and fellow employees.
Ability
to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability
to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Possess
good mechanical aptitude.
Ability
to reason and process numbers effectively.
Ability
to perform physical labor involving lifting and carrying at least 75 pounds on a routine basis.
Ability
to walk, crawl, climb, reach, and maneuver where physical mobility is required to complete the duties of the job.
Ability
to operate equipment and power tools.
Required training
includes graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent and one year experience as a Maintenance Trainee.
Valid
Michigan Commercial Drivers' License permit with proper endorsements.
