Test Lab Supervisor
Irby Utilities, one of the largest utility distribution organizations in America, is seeking a Test Lab Supervisor to oversee the testing, repair, assembly, and shipping of electrical safety equipment and tool repair center materials.
Job Summary The Test Lab Supervisor manages and coordinates the work of employees who test power equipment, repair hand tools, assemble ground and jumper sets, build rope assemblies, and handle ordering, receiving, storing, issuing, and shipping of materials, supplies, tools, equipment, and repair parts in the test lab or tool repair center.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Advise and instruct subordinates in all aspects of work and safe operation of equipment and machinery.
Ensure adherence to company safety policies and procedures.
Monitor backlog, prioritize orders, and expedite workflow as required.
Determine work procedures, prepare work schedules, and streamline workflow.
Review documentation for accuracy, legibility, completeness, and compliance with procedures.
Advise employees on care and preservation of items received, stored, and shipped.
Maintain equipment in safe working condition; resolve or report maintenance issues.
Assist manager in evaluating inventory usage and recommending optimization.
Research inventory discrepancies and recommend remedial actions.
Study inventory history to eliminate non‑usable, slow‑moving, and excess stock.
Determine disposition of used or damaged property and manage accordingly.
Analyze operational activities to identify inefficiencies and propose improvements.
Conduct safety and other training as assigned.
Assist manager in completing required facility safety inspections.
Ensure facilities meet safety and cleanliness standards.
Compile and prepare management reports.
Resolve customer complaints and inventory issues presented by subordinate staff.
Monitor operational supplies and take action to maintain adequate stocks.
Issue written and oral instructions and assist in transmittal of administrative information.
Assign duties and examine work for exactness, neatness, and policy compliance.
Evaluate, develop, and train new employees; review progress of subordinates with Branch Manager.
Maintain harmony among workers and resolve grievances.
Observe non‑employees in the warehouse for safety and report unauthorized persons to Manager.
Supervise subordinated activities.
Establish goals and objectives to meet departmental targets; develop and implement new methods to improve efficiency.
Analyze operational issues to determine effective use of resources.
Plan and schedule tasks over the short and long term to determine priorities and assign work.
Operate all equipment in the work area safely, including testing equipment, air compressor, washers, dryers, and pallet jack.
Clean and inspect customer material for defects or damage.
Perform dielectric testing of customer material.
Package customer material for shipment and complete required testing documentation.
Pull material on pick tickets; package and ship material to customers.
Assist walk‑in customers with testing orders or merchandise purchasing.
Operate material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies.
Minimum Qualifications
Strong knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
Ability to respond effectively to customer inquiries, complaints, and regulatory requests.
Proficiency in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural documentation.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across all levels.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, including data gathering and conclusion drawing with limited information.
Working knowledge of test lab and tool repair center operations.
Familiarity with shipping/receiving practices, policies and techniques.
Understanding of merchandise handling and production methods.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Four to five years of related experience and/or training with one year of supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
