About the Role Newport News Shipbuilding, the largest industrial employer in Virginia and a division of HII, is hiring pipefitter trainees or certification candidates for high‑school seniors and graduates graduating in 2026. The position offers a $500 sign‑on bonus and a $500 relocation bonus for candidates residing 50 miles or more from Newport News, VA. The job is full‑time and includes competitive wages, weekly paychecks, paid time off, medical benefits, a 401(k) company match, employee discounts, and more.
The role is designed for individuals with no prior trade experience willing to complete a three‑week (120‑hour) unpaid training program in the pipefitter trade, or for those who hold a certificate in a related field. Candidates with certificates in commercial pipefitting, plumbing, HVAC, irrigation, welding, hydraulics, or storm/wastewater management are encouraged to apply and may be eligible to waive the trainee program.
Key Responsibilities
Install complex piping systems on ships, including over 23 miles on submarines and more than 230 miles on aircraft carriers.
Assemble, weld, and secure pipe segments according to engineering drawings.
Read blueprints, fabricate, install, inspect, and test ship piping systems.
Troubleshoot and repair existing piping systems as needed.
Work in varied weather conditions, extreme heights on scaffolding or ladders, and confined spaces such as tanks and compartments.
Follow strict safety, precision, and adaptability standards in all work environments.
Required Qualifications
Pass a 3‑week (unpaid) training program or present a certificate/diploma in pipefitting or a directly related field.
Undergo a background investigation and drug screen.
Pass a physical agility test and lift at least 40 pounds.
Be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, climb, and perform overhead work.
Work overtime, any shift, outdoors year‑round, and at extreme heights.
Maintain a clean‑shaven appearance to use a respirator.
Be willing to work in small, tight, confined spaces.
Have U.S. citizenship (required).
Training & Advancement Newport News Shipbuilding partners with the Virginia Ship Repair Association, local community colleges, and maritime training facilities to offer Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs. The Pipefitter Trainee program is hosted at Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth, VA) and runs once a month with 5‑10 students per class.
Upon successful completion of training and performance in the early job period, trainees can advance to full‑time pipefitter roles and pursue further certifications.
