Tax Experienced Manager, Core Tax Services
The Tax Experienced Manager, Core Tax Services is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Manager is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing, communicating potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy and making top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. Additionally, the Manager will be a critical member of the office/region leadership team, actively participating in marketing, networking, and business development while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.
Job Duties
Tax Compliance
Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens and ensure self and client service teams comply with firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual ("TQM").
Conduct top-level review of tax returns (T/R) and resolve all tax issues with client; involve specialists when appropriate.
Communicate with client and Assurance about issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with the client and/or partner as appropriate.
Manage client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project.
Provide timely advice to the client.
Plan and review the tax process and procedures, including budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement process and time incurred versus budget with assistance of senior, timely billing, managing identified out-of-scope activity, and timely collection of A/R.
Research
Identify when research is needed; frame issues concisely and report analysis.
Identify complex issues for the engagement team and provide research methodology for efficient research process.
Train managers/staff on research skills and help appropriately frame tax issues for analysis.
Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Apply firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding ASC 740, guiding others in learning and applying these principles.
Review tax provisions, apply in-depth knowledge of ASC 740 where applicable to practice work.
Review prepared workpapers as needed.
Explain and discuss with client components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions and other complexities surrounding ASC 740.
Tax Consulting
Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes.
Apply combination of tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions and maximize client benefits while managing risk.
Coordinate with STS specialists as appropriate.
Monitor implementation of work plans (client service plan) for tax consulting projects.
Manage written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance.
Provide assistance with protests at the appeals level and implement applicable firm strategies.
Manage client expectations.
Tax Specialization
Develop in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state/local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).
Organize and conduct or participate in effective external CPE training sessions in the area of specialization at least once per year.
Train and mentor managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas.
Strategy Development
Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the firm, or firm personnel.
Research and implement tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies and ideas.
Consistently suggest improvements to previous work products or approaches.
Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects.
Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.
Train associates and seniors on current software tools.
Act as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates.
Provide verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
Education Bachelor’s degree
required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation
preferred.
Experience
Six (6) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience.
Prior supervisory experience.
Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties (preferred).
License/Certifications
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role (preferred).
Software
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (preferred).
Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software (preferred).
