Job Summary
The Tax Experienced Manager, Core Tax Services is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying ways to comply with tax regulations, and acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. This role involves applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing and communicating potential risks and changes in tax policy, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. The Tax Experienced Manager, Core Tax Services Manager is a critical member of the office/region leadership team and participates in marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise, while maintaining client relationships and serving as the primary contact for complex questions.
Job Duties
Tax Compliance
Ensures that clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and that self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
Conducts top-level review of tax returns and resolutions of tax issues with the client; involves specialists where appropriate
Communicates with client and Assurance on issues identified in tax accrual reviews
Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate
Manages client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project
Provides timely advice to clients
Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures, including:
Budgeting and staffing
Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior
Timely billing including management of identified out-of-scope activity and communication to client
Timely collection of A/R
Research
Identifies when research is needed; frames issues to be researched clearly; reports the analysis concisely
Identifies complex issues to be researched by the engagement team and provides research methodology for efficient research
Trains managers/senior staff on research skills and helps appropriately frame tax issues for analysis
Involves firm specialists, as appropriate
ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Applies Firm policies, standards, and the BDO TQM regarding ASC 740 and FIN 48
Explains and discusses with the client components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions, and other ASC 740 complexities
Reviews tax provisions and applies in-depth knowledge of ASC 740 if applicable
May review prepared workpapers
Tax Consulting
Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes
Applies tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions
Maximizes client benefits while managing risk
Coordinates with STS specialists to determine applicability of STS consulting specialties
Monitors implementation of client service plans for tax consulting projects
Manages inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance
May provide effective assistance with protests at the appeals level
Implements applicable Firm strategies
Manages client expectations
Tax Specialization
Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more tax areas (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits)
May organize or participate in external CPE training sessions at least once per year
May train and mentor managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas
Strategy Development
Develops new or improved ideas to improve client position, the Firm, or Firm personnel (e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits)
Researches and implements tax strategies, including exploring new strategies
Suggests improvements to previous work products or approaches
May present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects
Reviews work prepared by associates and seniors and provides review comments
Trains associates and seniors on current software tools
May act as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates
Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Education :
Bachelor’s degree, required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred
Masters in Accountancy or Taxation preferred
Experience :
Six (6) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required
Prior supervisory experience, required
Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred
License/Certifications :
CPA certification, Attorney admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction, or IRS Enrolled Agent (or equivalent)
Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred
Software :
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, preferred
Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software, preferred
