Maintenance Section Supervisor I or II – Woodville Maintenance
Texas Department of Transportation seeks a proactive leader to oversee a maintenance section, ensuring safe roadways in Tyler County and surrounding areas. The role prioritizes safety, budget management, and emergency response.
Essential Duties
Handles public complaints and maintains public relations.
Inspects road conditions, work in progress, and crew/completed projects.
Plans, coordinates, and implements emergency response to inclement weather, flooding, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
Plans, schedules, and coordinates work project needs with the Area Engineer and other district staff on a regular basis.
Prepares and monitors the budget.
Prioritizes and assigns projects to the maintenance section assistant and crew chiefs; guides them in planning and scheduling personnel, materials, and equipment.
Ensures projects follow established safety guidelines.
Manages maintenance section office activities including human resources, public relations, facilities, inventory management, and general office administration.
Trains other employees.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High School Graduate or Equivalent.
Maintenance Section Supervisor I:
7 years roadway maintenance or construction‑related work (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
Maintenance Section Supervisor II:
8 years roadway maintenance or construction‑related work (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver’s license; this position requires driving a state vehicle.
Must hold a Commercial Class "A" Driver’s License or obtain a CDL "A" License within 180 calendar days from date of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Commercial driver’s license (CDL).
Competencies
Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
Understanding of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
Familiarity with Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Incident management procedures.
Supervising technical staff and scheduling work assignments.
Public relations for maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Administrative support practices, including writing, editing, and report preparation.
Preparation and maintenance of confidential and sensitive records.
Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Exposure to extreme cold and heat; below 32°F or above 100°F for more than one hour.
Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time; frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
Prolonged standing; verbal communication required.
Visual acuity for reading, computer use, and inspection of small defects.
Conditions of Employment
The job is physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment medical examination.
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; random testing applies.
Must be able to report for duty 24 hours to respond during emergencies and adverse weather events.
