Job Summary The Accountant II performs a variety of professional accounting functions for a department. The role involves maintaining financial records, preparing reports, conducting account reconciliations, and ensuring compliance with state financial regulations and policies.

Primary Responsibilities

Prepare, analyze, and maintain financial records, including accounts, ledgers, and supporting documentation.

Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, ensuring compliance with applicable government regulations and policies.

Reconcile general ledger accounts, resolving discrepancies in a timely manner.

Prepare and review journal entries to ensure proper recording of financial transactions.

Ensure all accounting practices comply with applicable state and federal regulations, as well as internal policies.

Prepare audit schedules and provide necessary documentation to internal and external auditors.

Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, ensuring accuracy and timely payment processing.

Knowledge and Skills In-depth understanding of accounting principles, practices, and regulations, especially in a governmental setting.

Proficient in preparing and analyzing financial statements, budget reports, and financial summaries.

Skilled in performing account reconciliations, identifying discrepancies, and resolving issues.

Knowledge of governmental accounting standards and regulations, ensuring compliance in all financial processes.

Advanced knowledge of accounting software (e.g., PeopleSoft, Oracle, QuickBooks) and Microsoft Excel (including pivot tables, formulas, and data analysis tools).

Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university, plus 2 years of accounting experience.

Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.

Other Job Related Education and/or Experience Finance and Accounting Experience Preferred. Functional Job Duties include but not limited to balancing and reconciling accounts and payments for the agency. Working in multiple systems for accounting purposes. The ability to identify errors and clearly note the procedure for others to follow. Logging, Tracking and Maintaining multiple payment types for the team and agency.

SALARY: Starting salary is $64,570.06. A higher starting salary would apply only if a promotional opportunity for a current state employee. Only completed applications will be accepted. Veteran Preference: A copy of a DD-214 must be submitted to the Hiring Official at the time of interview to be considered for Veteran Preference.

Method of pay is direct deposit. Checking or savings account is required if hired.

7% Mandatory contribution to AR Teacher Retirement System is required if hired.

Employees hired or rehired in 2014 or later will be automatically enrolled into the Arkansas Diamond Deferred Compensation 457 Plan with a 3% automatic deduction. If you do not wish to participate, you have 90 days from your first deduction to opt out.
