Description of Work

Salary Range: $48,222.00 – $84,388.00 This is an INTERNAL POSTING open ONLY for current employees of the NC Department of Adult Correction. This is an anticipated vacancy. The position is expected to be available on 03/01/2026. Location: Alexander Correctional Institution, Taylorsville, NC.

Employees in this class are involved in the planning, supervision, and coordination of activities at a close‑custody institution and supervise Correctional Lieutenant III’s. They follow security policies and procedures, perform on‑the‑job training, assign and supervise custody staff, and coordinate administrative affairs within the facility. They may serve as the Officer‑in‑Charge. The position supervises more employees than the Correctional Captain I or II in institutions that typically include restrictive and controlled housing, and generally reports to a Correctional Assistant Superintendent.

Management Preferences & Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Documented supervisory skills in a prison facility.

Knowledge of facility operations.

Knowledge of prison’s policy and procedures.

Documented report‑writing skills.

This is a full‑time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

Note to Current State Employees

The salary grade for this position is NC13. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected, a new salary will be recalculated taking into account the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or GED diploma plus three years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant, or two years as a Correctional Lieutenant III, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary special qualifications must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
