About the NC Department of Adult Correction The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervise sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post‑Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Salary Range $39,671.00 – $69,426.00

Location Alexander Correctional Institution, Taylorsville, NC (Alexander County)

Responsibilities

Provide first‑line supervision to Correctional Officer III’s in close‑custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing.

Assign lower‑level custody staff to specific areas or posts.

Oversee officer activities and performance to ensure the custody, security and welfare of inmates are maintained.

Arrange work schedules to guarantee shift coverage and implement operational procedures.

Ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.

Supervise more staff than recognized in the lower‑level Correctional Sergeant I or II and report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences

Thorough knowledge of the overall operation of correctional facilities.

Thorough knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates.

Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.

Full‑time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

NC09 . State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase

Minimum Education and Experience High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary special qualifications: eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
