Correctional Sergeant III (S) – NC Department of Adult Correction Job Classification Title: Correctional Sergeant III (S) | Position Number: 60058816 | Grade: NC09 | Location: Alexander Correctional Institution, Taylorsville, NC. This is a full‑time (40 hours per week) position with state benefits.

Salary Range: $39,671.00 – $69,426.00.

About the Role Work in this class involves first‑line supervision to Correctional Officer III’s in close‑custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Assign lower‑level custody staff to a particular area or post. Oversee officer activities and performance, ensuring custody, security and welfare of inmates are maintained. Arrange work schedules, implement operational procedures and enforce policies and regulations. Supervise more staff than recognized in the lower‑level Correctional Sergeant I or II. Report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Supervise Correctional Officer III’s and lower‑level custody staff in close‑custody settings.

Arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage and operational readiness.

Implement operational procedures and enforce policies and regulations.

Monitor officer performance and coordinate disciplinary actions as needed.

Ensure the custody, security and welfare of inmates are maintained.

Report to Correctional Lieutenant III and Correctional Housing Unit Manager.

Management Preferences – Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the overall operation of correctional facilities.

Thorough knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates.

Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or GED diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary special qualifications: eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
