The Respiratory Therapist 1 (RT 1) is a newly graduated, licensed and registered RT hired into our Children's Hospital RT Residency Program. This position will develop skills and learn to provide a full range of cardiopulmonary diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care services to patients in Children’s Hospital. The RT 1 will complete required competencies and qualifications to practice as the primary resource to meet the critical care, emergency, and trauma care needs of the neonatal and pediatric patient. The RT 1 obtains, reviews, and interprets data and assesses the need for and response to respiratory care interventions in consultation and conjunction with their preceptor or educator, medical, nursing and other disciplines to optimize patient care planning and delivery. The RT 1 will respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies, provide airway maintenance manual, and mechanical ventilator support using a variety of devices and techniques and administers medical gases, humidity therapy, inhaled aerosol medications, bronchial hygiene, lung expansion therapies and instructs patient’s family and continuing care providers in the administration of respiratory procedures and the proper use of respiratory therapy equipment and supplies. The RT 1 will participate in orientation with a preceptor, multidisciplinary classes, and didactic classroom time as assigned. The RT 1 reports directly to the Respiratory Care Supervisors and Educators and is responsible for performing and documenting according to both departmental and university policy and procedure. California Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) or at the time of onboarding American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) American Heart Association (AHA) Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) American Heart Association (AHA) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Currently enrolled or graduate from a COARC accredited Respiratory Therapy Program Currently enrolled or graduate from a COARC accredited Respiratory Therapy Program. Possess the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. This includes but is not limited to, the ability to perform all of the required procedures and assessments and possession of a thorough understanding of the techniques and rationale for the selection and application of respiratory care procedures. Basic computer skills: date entry, e-mail, EMR, Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point. Current with mandatory competency in all clinical areas assigned to work. Performs basic and advanced cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures and calculations, collects and interprets data to facilitate objective patient assessment and effective care planning. Assist other health care professionals in the interpretation and clinical application of results. Demonstrate sensitivity and a respectful manner toward patients and visitors. Demonstrate effectiveness in spoken and written communications. Responsible to be knowledgeable of and comply with all applicable infection control, health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the department and/or work unit and the medical center. Ability to work independently, problem solve and exhibit good time management practices. Current with all mandatory Hospital Competencies Responsible for maintaining reliable work habits, attendance, and completed assignments. Prioritizes patient’s care based on emergent needs, patient safety, resources available to meet identified needs, routine care. Ability to establish and maintain productive and positive working relationships with team members. Continuing maintenance and development of clinical skills and technical competency in Adult/Pediatric, Emergency and Trauma respiratory care, applications, procedures and equipment.
