Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel, the Attorney Supervisor is responsible for assisting with the supervision of a group of attorneys and professional staff involved in litigation and other legal activities. The incumbent may also coordinate more complex or major specialized areas in the Legal Division and/or carry statewide responsibility for the Department’s legislative program. The Attorney Supervisor assists the Assistant Chief Counsel in coordinating the planning, organizing, directing, and reviewing the work of a major legal section of a large legal office; supports the Assistant Chief Counsel as a legal advisor to top management; prepares legislation and represents the Department before the Legislature; and formulates legal policy.

The Caltrans Legal Division is comprised of five offices statewide: headquarters in Sacramento and branches in Oakland, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Fresno. Our environment is supportive and challenging, with substantial responsibility at every career stage.

Eligibility for Hire

Eligibility may be determined by your score on the Attorney Supervisor exam. Those without current eligibility (transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who are new to state civil services must be on the state examination list. Use the link provided to apply for the exam.

Special Requirements

Applicants must take the CalHR examination for the classification and be on the eligibility list.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. The SOQ must be typed, no more than two pages, 12‑pt Arial.

The SOQ must answer the required questions in order, numbered, and written clearly and concisely.

Proficient knowledge of civil litigation laws, regulations, and related codes; sufficient knowledge of the Department’s mission; experience in supervisory or management roles; breadth of experience as an attorney or Attorney Supervisor; ability to advise top management, formulate legal policy, and recommend strategic changes.

Possession of minimum qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. Transcripts or diplomas for education-based eligibility must be provided and may be verified by the applicant. Foreign credentials require US equivalency assessment.
