DETENTION OFFICER OR DETENTION CORPORAL

Detention Shift Sergeant
SALARY RANGES: DO: $23.85 to $38.84/hr. DC: $30.45 to $49.58 hr.
Position Summary Under general supervision of the Detention Sergeant, responsible for maintaining custody and control of inmates in the detention facility. Enforces laws and departmental regulations that apply to detention to ensure the safety of personnel and the public. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Must be twenty-one years of age.
Must possess, or be able to obtain within first thirty days of employment and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D driver’s license.
Successful completion and maintenance of the Corrections Officer/Detention Officer certification in accordance with New Mexico Adult Jail standards within one year of employment.
Successful completion and maintenance of Food Handler’s certification in accordance with the Department of Health within one year of hire date.
Must be able to be certified to carry firearms through the Los Alamos County Police Department Range Course within six months of hire and maintain thereafter.
Successful completion of thorough background investigation, including FBI fingerprint check.
Successful completion of the pre-employment physical and psychological exam prior to commencing work.
Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening prior to employment and subsequent random drug and alcohol screening while employed.
Must not have been convicted of a felony or other crime involving moral turpitude.
Additional Minimum Qualifications for Detention Corporal
Two years of experience as a Detention Officer demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility.
Must maintain the Corrections Officer/Detention Officer certification in accordance with New Mexico Adult Jail standards.
Preferred Qualifications Detention Officer
One-year relevant experience.
Associates Degree from an accredited college or university.
