We encourage you to consider joining NCDOT where our work not only serves the citizens of North Carolina but has an impact on our world through all modes of transportation.**Description of Work**This engineering position is in the Structures Management Unit Working Drawing Squad review and approve/reject a wide variety of moderately complex designs prepared by contractors, producers and fabricators The submittals consist of moderate level of structural calculations, designs and drawings for different structural elements such as falsework for bridge bents, foundation excavation protection & temporary shoring, structural steel, miscellaneous steel, bearings, expansion and modular expansion joint seals, bridge railings and barriers, equipment on structures, demolition plans, barrier walls, prestressed concrete deck panels, and precast arch and box culverts. Perform overweight vehicle load studies for bridges and culverts that are received from the Oversize/Overweight Permits Unit and Division personnel. Compute equivalent loading for special permit vehicle axle configurations. Compare equivalent loading for special permit vehicles to bridge operating rating to determine if bridges or culverts will safely carry the permit vehicle. Investigate various options for special permit vehicle passage, such as revising load distribution to structural members, restricting passage or reducing vehicle impact. Complex reviews initially will be completed alongside a more experienced engineer. The submittals consist of advanced level of structural calculations, designs and drawings for different structural elements such as temporary detour structures, overhead sign assemblies, roadway lighting, digital message sign enclosures, girder handling, temporary supports, overweight permits to temporary detour structures, fabrication problems, mechanically stabilized embankments (MSE), and retaining walls. Communicate with the contractor, sub-contractor, fabricator, producer or NCDOT engineers on informational and technical issues to acquire additional information, clarification or a resolution between what is being proposed and what is required by the Contract. Draft letter or memo of response which addresses all relative issues with minor direction from the Team Leader.

A thorough knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts and practices for the design and analysis of highway structures and the ability to keep up with current developments and trends in areas of expertise, interpret plans, specifications, working drawings and various codes in the structural review of projects let to construction. Coordinate and communicate with office and field engineers, other DOT units, FHWA, private engineering firms, contractors, fabricators and related outside agencies. Ability to communicate orally and in documents clearly, concisely and in an organized manner, reports addressing moderately complex engineering concepts and facts. Ability to provide consultation to clients or others related to the specific program/project. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others. Ability to establish expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives. Working knowledge to oversee compliance regarding multiple specialties. Working knowledge of the organizational and business objectives of section/specialty.**Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences****Salary Grade and Salary Range:** **NC18 $61,545.00 - $107,703.00****Management prefers applicants with the following:*** Experience reviewing, approving and/or rejecting a wide variety of moderately complex designs prepared by contractors, producers and fabricators.* Working knowledge of evaluating existing bridges and culverts on the state highway system to determine their ability to safely carry overweight vehicles.* Experience communicating and requesting information from contractors, fabricators, producers and other NCDOT units.* Working knowledge of performing load rating analysis and maintaining inventory of structures on Greenline routes in accordance with overweight vehicles defined by statutes in the North Carolina Administrative Code (NCAC).* Working knowledge of engineering concepts and practices related to design specifications, construction methods, bridge load rating, bridge preservation, bridge rehabilitation and replacement projects.**Minimum Education and Experience**Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
