We encourage you to consider joining NCDOT where our work not only serves the citizens of North Carolina but has an impact on our world through all modes of transportation.**Description of Work**This engineering position in the Structures Management Unit Eastern Field Operations Group prepares contract plans for Preservation, Rehabilitation, and Repair (PRR) and Emergency repairs for Existing Structures. This involves an ability to read and understand old designs and plans, structure inspection reports, and field scoping notes to evaluate and determine the best methods for PRR and Emergency repairs. Load rating existing structures. This involves studying bridge inspection reports and evaluating the structural condition of all bridges, culverts and pipes on the state highway system, utilization of advanced software to determine the safe load carrying capacities of all structural members and connections as well as evaluating maintenance proposals from Division personnel for upgrades and repairs to highway structures in their efforts to improve load ratings. Engineering design and drafting of contract plans of new and replacement structures. This involves the layout and design of bridges, culverts and other structures in accordance with AASHTO Specifications and the Structures Management Unit Design Manual, policies and procedures. This includes structures on geometrically complex alignments and technically complex design requirements such as continuous or curved steel girders, moveable bridge components, trusses and connections. High level computer software such as STAAD, Open Bridge Designer, Leap Bridge, Merlin Dash, and NCBDS will be used for design. Communicate with internal and external partners. This includes written and verbal communication of moderately complex engineering concepts with colleagues to ensure work can be completed in a timely and organized manner. Communication with other NCDOT units and Division personnel may also be necessary to ensure everyone has information needed to complete tasks and deliver projects.

Ability to identify and plan for resources. Ability to negotiate and approve designs, program/project specifications of others to meet desired compliance with engineering principles, standards, statues, codes, regulations and design needs. Ability to determine program/project priorities. Ability to explain/write related facts in a clear, concise and organized manner, addressing engineering concepts, practices and regulations**Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences**Salary Grade and Salary Range:

NC18 $61,545.00 - $107,703.00**Management prefers applicants with the following:*** Experience preparing designs and final contract plans for new construction, repair, preservation, and rehabilitation of highway structures.* Experience in analysis and load rating of existing structures to determine structural capacity.* Demonstrated ability to communicate and write technical reports in compliance with policy* Experience reviewing structure inspection reports and evaluating repairs performed in response to priority action requests identified during the inspection process.* Experience coordinating, facilitating, and participating in a collaborative approach to complete assignments**Minimum Education and Experience**Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
